Pilot Program Offers Free Employee Assistance to Small Nonprofits

The New Hampshire Center for Nonprofits, in partnership with the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and KGA, launched a free Employee Assistance Program (EAP) designed specifically for small nonprofits in New Hampshire. This pilot program is the result of ongoing conversations with nonprofit leaders across the state, who identified staff well-being as a growing need during increasingly demanding times.

Since its launch in early July, thirty-six New Hampshire nonprofits have been accepted into the program, representing 165 employees, with more nonprofits opting-in every day.

Meeting Everyday Challenges with Real-Time Support

The EAP offers confidential, 24/7 access to services for nonprofit employees and the adult members of their households. Leaders and managers will also find tools tailored to support their unique role within an organization.

Through this program, individuals can connect with professionals who can help them navigate everyday stressors and unexpected challenges alike. Whether someone is facing a mental health concern, caregiving responsibilities, or legal or financial questions, the EAP provides a range of services intended to meet people where they are.

The support available includes:

  • Help addressing emotional and mental health concerns, including short-term counseling and crisis support
  • Guidance for parenting and childcare challenges, from finding services to navigating behavioral concerns
  • Resources for those caring for aging parents or loved ones, including eldercare referrals and planning assistance
  • Consultations on legal and financial matters, such as creating a will, managing debt, or understanding housing rights
  • Tips and resources to promote personal well-being — from improving sleep and nutrition to maintaining physical health
  • Tools for managing stress and workplace dynamics, including support with burnout, job transitions, and conflict

A Step Toward Sustainable Support

This pilot reflects a broader effort to strengthen the nonprofit sector by investing in the people who power it. For small nonprofits with ten or less staff members and often without access to formal HR or wellness programs, the EAP removes a significant barrier to employee support by offering services at no cost.

“This is one meaningful way to show your team that their well-being matters,” said Kathleen Reardon, CEO of the NH Center for Nonprofits. “When we invest in our people, we strengthen the whole organization — and, in turn, the communities we serve.”
