Systems Administrator
Brewster Academy, an independent boarding/day school, provides 360 boys and girls, grades 9 through PG, representing a community of diverse and talented learners, with a transformative and highly personalized education. Located on the shores of beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee and close to the White Mountains, its 80 acres offer students and employees classic New England facilities and a resource-rich community.
Basic Function and Responsibility
The Systems Administrator is responsible for the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of Brewster Academy’s network, core systems, and services, globally. This includes, but is not limited to file services, directory services, TCP/IP, DHCP, Layer 2 services, Routing, DNS, VPN, authentication, user account creation, management, maintenance, and remediation. The Systems Administrator is expected to monitor, maintain, support, and optimize all networked hardware and associated operating systems/software as per the network design specified by the System Engineer and our partners. This includes monitoring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing all Academy servers, physical or virtual, and their associated operating systems.
The Systems & Network Administrator will apply proven communication, analytical and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate and resolve issues in order to maximize the benefit of the IT systems investments while assisting with the strategic future development of those systems.
Formal Education/Certification
College or University degree, with either a concentration in Network Administration, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or Information Systems Management or applicable work experience in such fields.
Knowledge/Expertise
Strong understanding and technical knowledge of current network and computer operating systems, hardware, protocols, and standards.
Strong understanding and working knowledge of server management software especially Apple, Linux, and Microsoft server platforms.
Strong understanding of Directory Services, including LDAP and Active Directory, Microsoft Azure, and how they interact with different systems via direct connection and Single Sign On.
Strong understanding of layer two switchings, software-defined networking, and wireless networking, including access control systems, role-based privileges, VLAN and subnetting, and systems accessibility.
Strong understanding of wireless networking, in particular via the ArubaOS controller-based solution, including access control and intrusion protection related to those systems.
Demonstrated history of keeping up-to-date with the latest advances in the field of technology, including hardware, software, and network environments.
Proven experience in IT infrastructure, systems planning, security principles, and general software management best practices.
Working technical knowledge of current software protocols and Internet standards.
Extensive experience with core software applications.
Excellent software and hardware troubleshooting experience.
Extensive application support experience.
Competence with testing, flow chart, and data mapping tools and procedures.
Excellent understanding of the school’s strategic plan, school-wide goals, and objectives.
Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
Experience with systems design and development from requirements analysis through to day-to-day operations.
Demonstrated ability to apply IT in solving operational problems and in support of achieving established goals.
Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations as they relate to IT.

This is a full-time, 12-month exempt position with 4 weeks of vacation and other associated benefits.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities*
Operational Management
Regularly monitor and diagnose problems with network equipment and perform equipment repair or upgrades when appropriate.
Interact with the help desk and other teams to assist in troubleshooting, identify root causes, and provide technical support when needed.
Perform routine/scheduled audits of the systems, including all backups
Create and maintain documentation for all systems
Monitor, tune and test system performance; prepare and deliver system performance statistics and reports to the System Engineer and IT team.
Apply operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes as needed to maintain proper security and performance.
Install, configure, and maintain network cabling and other networking equipment such as LIUs, Equipment Racks, Switches, and UPS. in conjunction with our external partners.
Perform server administration tasks, including user/group administration, security permissions, group policies, print services, research event log warnings and errors, and resource monitoring, ensuring system architecture components work together seamlessly.
Provide second-tier technical support to users concerning network system operations.
Manage security solutions, including firewall and intrusion detection systems.
Ensure effective and timely responses to network and server-related work requests
Collaborate with and assist other technical staff in their issue resolution as requested, and request collaboration or assistance in-network or systems issue resolution as needed.
Strategy and Planning
Collaborate on network design and capacity planning with the System Engineer, our IT team, and our external partners.
Collaborate with technology staff and school administrators, as needed, to identify solutions for fulfilling school-wide objectives and goals.
Regularly reassess current solutions in conjunction with the System Engineer, and develop plans to modify, improve or replace those solutions as needed.
Acquisition and Deployment
Conduct research on network products, services, protocols, and standards in support of network procurement and development efforts.
Identify new applications and enhancements to existing network systems.
Ensure compatibility and interoperability of installed systems.
Coordinate and perform in-depth tests, including end-user reviews for modified and new systems.
Train and as appropriate certify in technologies in use by the Academy to maintain and improve skillsets.
On-Call, On-Site Support
This position assumes on-call responsibility for addressing network or system outages when other Office of Technology staff are not available or are off-duty.
Weekend Duty
Provide coverage in a regular rotation of weekend Tech on-call schedule
Other duties may be assigned.
Attendance
Individuals in this position are expected to be available during the normal business hours of the Academy, and may occasionally be asked to vary their schedule and/or work overtime to meet department requirements.
