Shelter Manager

Cross Roads House

Founded in 1982, Cross Roads House provides emergency and transitional shelter to homeless men, women, and children in the Seacoast area. We provide homeless families and individuals with basic necessities, as well as the tools and guidance they need to return to permanent housing. 

Seeking a candidate with management-level experience with scheduling and supervising staff and with development of workflow or other organizational systems. The Shelter Manager will lead direct service staff and ensure a safe and respectful shelter environment. This position requires excellent communication and motivational skills and a drive to be part of our mission to help people experiencing homelessness to succeed. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Position Summary: Full-time; Manage Direct Service staff; enforce shelter rules and regulations; and ensure a safe, respectful front desk and shelter environment



· Eligibility for employment in the United States; written and verbal command of the English language

· Minimum education requirement: high school diploma; bachelor degree preferred

· Management experience scheduling and supervising staff as well as development of workflow or other organizational systems

· Preferred experience working with emergency shelters, homeless and/or low income populations

· Excellent communication skills

· Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs

· Able to lift 25 pounds occasionally as needed and ability to stand and move around for long periods of time

· Background check required


· Hire, train, supervise, and schedule Direct Service staff

· Conduct annual performance reviews for Direct Service staff

· Work with Program Director to identify and schedule staff training opportunities

· Conduct regularly scheduled Direct Service staff meetings at various times to include all shifts

· Maintain adequate staff coverage 24/7/365 to ensure the safety and welfare of shelter residents

· Participate in on-call schedule for after hours and weekend consultation, and/or cover direct care shifts if necessary

· Enforce shelter policies and procedures as well as resident rules

· Work together with Facility Manager and custodial staff to ensure all shelter spaces are clean, set up and prepared for each new arriving resident

· Act as primary liaison to the Coordinated Entry Program and oversee bed assignments and referrals

· Respond to resident and community grievances and concerns

· Hear initial resident appeals for disciplinary matters, including shelter bars (evictions)

· Investigate and resolve internal resident incident reports

· Support the work of case management staff, partner agencies, and on-site service providers as needed

· Work with the Program Director and other staff to ensure regulatory compliance

· Support volunteer activities and donor relations and interactions

· Work alongside and perform all duties assigned to Direct Service staff*

· Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
