Shelter Support Staff is responsible for providing a safe, clean and non-threatening environment to persons experiencing homelessness.  Through providing input on policies and programs, this role assists with the identification and implementation of actions for continuous improvement in Shelter offerings and operations that aligns with our mission in serving the most vulnerable population.  This position performs activities to support effective daily operations of the Shelter; including documenting safety, security, participant behaviors, medical concerns, and any other issue; monitor and request supplies as necessary; communicate with participants; participants engagement; housekeeping as necessary; always maintaining awareness to ensure a safe and clean environment.  

  • Understanding and knowledge of housing safety concerns

  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, walk, use hand and fingers, reach with hands, arms, and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel and crouch.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance and color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. 
  • Supervise participant activities and respond to all participants needs
  • Explain program requirements and expectations to new participants and assure compliance with these guidelines
  • Coordinate bed assignments and other daily routines as necessary to support efficient daily operations
  • Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed, i.e. plunge toilet, etc. Maintain staff area and staff bathroom cleanliness, etc.
  • Address any behavioral issues that impact community living, criminal or otherwise
  • Provide input on policy and program decisions and proposed changes. Assist with implementation of changes that support the Continuous Improvement Process
  • Monitors inventory supplies and requests supplies from Shelter Lead/Supervisor/Manager as needed
  • Responsible, under supervision of the Shelter Supervisor, for all areas of daily program maintenance in compliance with the organization’s policies
  • Complete all shift logs, incident reports, and written violations. Communicate to supervisor/upper levels of management as needed.
  • Document and notify management of participants concerns, potential workflow problems, and/or any exceptions to the policy that can impact program safety
  • Adhere to staffing schedules to provide adequate/safe staffing coverage and to accomplish program objectives.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards to assure a safe work environment for participants and all personnel.
  • Provide “awake” shift coverage and maintain grounds security at all times.
  • Attend training sessions required to perform assigned tasks as directed by the Shelter Senior Operations Manager
