Strawbery Banke Museum (SBM) is a 10-acre living history museum located in the heart of downtown Portsmouth. The museum interprets daily life in the same historic waterfront neighborhood over 300+ years, making the 37 historic buildings accessible to a wide range of visitors one of our primary goals. A Visitors’ Center and a state-of-the-art Collections Center were built in 2005 and 2008, respectively.

Twenty-four business and community leaders from around region comprise the Board of Trustees.  The staff is comprised of 27 year-round and approximately 70 seasonal employees. The operational and capital expenditures range from $2-$3 million annually. Annual attendance is 90.000+ including 10,000 school children. Strawbery Banke hosts an ever-growing number of special events and programs for adults, children, and families throughout the year. Seasonal and holiday signature events are time-honored traditions that help make Portsmouth the vibrant destination it is.

Job Summary:

The Landscape Maintenance Associate maintains all aspects of the museum’s outdoor landscape including historic gardens, ornamental gardens, walkways, museum roads, garden architectural elements, and parking lots.

In addition to the landscape tasks, this position is an integral member of the Facilities Department, and tasked with assisting with events and wintertime buildings and grounds maintenance. 

On-site housing provided; this position requires the employee to reside in Strawbery Banke housing as a condition of employment in order to respond to off-hour emergencies during scheduled on-call shifts 3-4 nights per week, and snow removal on walkways as needed in winter months.

Position Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of plant health and gardening techniques
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of/with pruning a diverse range of species
  • Experience with maintenance of mechanical yard equipment (oil change, winterizing, changing blades)
  • Experience using ride-on mowers and, string trimmers
  • Education: Associate’s Degree in Horticulture, Plant Biology, Agriculture or related field preferred
  • 3 years of experience in landscaping, gardening, farming, or other related field
  • Eager to learn new skills
  • Positive, collegial attitude and ability to work cooperatively with others at all levels of the organization including direct reports, colleagues, supervisor, volunteers, and visitors of all ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.

Physical Requirements:

The candidate must be physically fit. Work entails moving around the 9-acre site, for extended periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions. Must be able to bend, stoop, and kneel, and must be able to lift up to 50 lbs throughout the day.

Required Working Conditions:

Work is conducted both indoors in a shared office space, and outdoors in all types of weather year-round.

Must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.

The essential duties of this position require regular attendance onsite, with limited capacity for remote work.


Full-time/Year-round (5 days/week, 37.5 hours/week, plus additional on-call coverage subject to overtime).  Monday - Friday preferred, but SBM will accommodate a different schedule as long as it is consistent each week.

Occasional evening and weekend work is required for special events (including event setup/cleanup) with schedule adjustments during the regular work week as necessary.

Free on-site housing provided:

This position requires the employee to reside in Strawbery Banke housing as a condition of employment in order to respond to off-hour emergencies during scheduled on-call shifts 3-4 nights per week, and snow removal on walkways as needed in winter months. A separate housing agreement will be provided requiring signature upon hire.

  • On-call time will be split each week with another member of the Facilities Department to cover any emergencies that may arise during non-business hours.  During each individual’s scheduled on-call hours, the employee  must be located within a close proximity to the property such that they are able to respond to on-campus emergencies within a reasonable timeframe. 
  • If the employee is not available for their regularly scheduled on-call date, it is the employee’s responsibility to change dates to a mutually agreeable schedule with the other on-site Facilities staff member, and to inform any schedule changes to their supervisor and SBM staff member responsible for updating the on-call schedule.  Any time worked during on-call emergencies after hours must be recorded by the employee in their weekly timesheet, and the employee will be paid accordingly.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

While this position is year-round, landscape maintenance varies seasonally. Therefore, a diverse set of tasks will be performed throughout the year.  The primary focus of the Landscape Maintenance Associate is to mow and string-trim the lawns, prune woody perennials, maintain walks and paths, maintain ornamental and historic gardens, keep the museum grounds clean and free of trash.  This position also maintains architectural elements within the landscape including, arbors, wood and iron benches, and the greenhouse structure. Additionally, this position assists with event set up, clean up, and general assistance during events. In the winter, this position will also perform tasks associated with building maintenance, and snow removal from walkways.

  • Mow lawns
  • String trim lawn and garden edges, fencelines, building foundations, etc.
  • Prune woody perennials
  • Weed, edge, plant, fertilize ornamental and historic gardens
  • Apply mulch and other bulk materials to garden beds
  • Sweep, weed whack, and perform minor repair on walks, roads, and parking lots
  • Bring woody debris to appropriate off-site facility
  • Paint and repair wood and iron garden elements
  • Perform winter and general maintenance on mechanical and equipment and hand tools
  • Assist with snow shoveling in winter
  • Assist with event set up, clean up, and day-of maintenance
  • Perform basic building maintenance tasks like deep-clean, painting, minor carpentry
