Manager of Humane Education Programs

Reports to:           Director of Administration and Programs

Hours:                     Full-time, Exempt, Salary

Function:  The Humane Education program has been well developed for over 25 years and has been a highly sought-after cornerstone of the agency.  This role will continue that work by providing humane educational programs to the community that support the Principles and Mission of the NHSPCA through community outreach with diversity of programs for youth.  

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Education or equivalent management experience
  2. Well-developed and proven planning ability
  3. Experience educating and managing children
  4. Organizational skills, written and oral communications skills
  5. Strong commitment to animal welfare with the ability to model appropriate treatment and handling of all types of small animals, cats, and dogs
  6. Excellent Customer Service and public relations skills
  7. Proven ability to meet deadlines, motivate, delegate and problem solve, and work with minimal supervision, and work cooperatively with groups 
  8. Adaptability for program success, which includes flexibility of work schedule (days, weekends) to cover care of animals, programmatic needs, adjusting to school schedules, Ability to accept and adjust programs for special needs children and students
  9. Computer literacy or aptitude
  10. Enthusiastic and energetic demeanor
  1. Develop, manage, and implement humane education curriculum and provide on-site humane education opportunities for ages preschool through high school (virtual and in-person as applicable) including but not limited to:
    1. Summer and vacation camps for youth that includes planting and maintaining the Children’s Learning Garden
    2. Story hour, youth clubs, birthday parties, tours and presentations
    3. Small animal education and awareness for schools, youth groups, and other community members as required
  2. Develop, manage, and implement off-site humane education presentations (virtual and in-person) with live animals, when appropriate including but not limited to:
    1. School Classrooms, home-school groups, after school programs, libraries, career fairs, or other community groups as requested
  3. Manage the Humane Education Classroom including but not limited to:
    1. The care of the various classroom pets and applying best practices
    2. Classroom maintenance and upkeep (order supplies as needed)
    3. Welcome unexpected guests to the classroom and provide information about pets and the agency
  4. Maintain and cultivate community relations such as:
    1. Support youth fundraisers, maintain and establish connections with local school educators, coordinate internships and job shadows, and other youth initiatives as required
    2. Work with other departments to provide educational elements and support of all community efforts
    3. Serve on Advisory Committees as requested and continue membership with Association of Professional Humane Educators
    4. Maintain subscription series, KIND News
  5. Supervise and manage Humane Education staff and volunteers
  6. Other duties as assigned
