Our Vision Southwestern Community Services seeks to create and support a climate within the communities of southwestern New Hampshire wherein poverty is never accepted as a chronic or permanent condition of any person’s life.

Our Mission SCS strives to empower low-income people and families. With dignity and respect, SCS will provide direct assistance, reduce stressors, and advocate for such persons and families as they lift themselves toward self-sufficiency. In partnership and in close collaboration with local communities, SCS will provide leadership and support to develop resources, programs, and services to further aid this population.

OUR ORGANIZATION

Southwestern Community Services (SCS), one of New Hampshire’s five community action agencies, has served the needs of Cheshire and Sullivan County citizens since 1965. SCS is a tax-exempt non-profit organization whose vision is to create and support a climate where poverty is never accepted as a chronic or permanent condition of any person’s life. SCS works to maintain awareness of the needs of the people in our communities. We provide a comprehensive range of services and advocacy programs—from housing to nutrition to education and more. Our programs are designed to have a measurable impact on poverty by covering the needs of children, families, and the elderly.


The Teacher is responsible for creating a supportive and enriching learning environment for preschool children in accordance with NH State Child Care Licensing Rules, Head Start Performance Standards and NAEYC Accreditation Standards. SCS Head Start Teachers will use and implement the Creative Curriculum to fidelity and the Pyramid Model to develop meaningful relationships with children and their families.

Requirements:
  • A minimum of a  baccalaureate or advanced degree in early childhood education awarded by a regionally accredited college or university; including at least 3 credits in the following core knowledge area: Child Growth and Development
  • Or a baccalaureate or advanced degree and coursework equivalent to a major relating to early childhood education such as elementary education, child development or another field of study focused on children awarded by a regionally accredited college or university; and have passed the Praxis II or have 24 Early Childhood Credits including at least 3 credits in the following core knowledge area: Child Growth and Development
  • Must be able to produce documentation of education before start date.
  • Must pass NH finger printing and criminal record check before hire.
  • Certification in child first aid and CPR (program will provide upon hire)
  • Classroom experience with pre-school children (Head Start experience preferred)
Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to the Active Supervision Policy
  • Maintain Confidentiality always.
  • Abide by NAEYC Code of Ethics
  • Implements the Pyramid Model
  • Plan and implement the Creative Curriculum to fidelity
  • Performing all duties to in accordance with all standards i.e.: NH State Child Care Licensing, Head Start Performance Standards, SCS Head Start Policy and Procedures and NAEYC Accreditation Standards.
  • Administer ESI screening and meet all other child screening deadlines.
  • Go on two home visits during the school year.
  • Have 3 Parent-Teacher conferences during the school year
  • Observe and record child observations into TS Gold to fidelity. (daily)
  • Initiate and collaborate with the center team to initiate and participate in Child and Family Reviews, Care Planning and Learning Prescriptions.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and the ability to build meaningful, collaborative relationships with all children, families, SCS staff and any other community partners on or off site or in the classroom.
  • Participate in Pre-service, Post-Service, Professional Development opportunities, monthly Education Services Meetings, Classroom Monthly Report Meetings, weekly Center Staff Meetings.
  • Trains and supports the teacher assistant(s).
  • Perform other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
