The Salem Animal Rescue League (SARL) saves the lives of abandoned, neglected, and injured animals by providing a safe haven, compassionate care and new permanent homes for them.

We are looking for a Veterinarian to join our leadership team, help transform our organization and realize our strategic vision:

The Veterinarian has complete responsibility for all aspects regarding the health and well-being of our shelter animals, from incoming medical examinations to preventative and emergency care.  He/She will have full oversight of the medical staff including staffing, training and development.  In addition, the Veterinarian will develop, maintain and expand our Community Medicine outreach programs, working with the local communities to evaluate needs and opportunities.  He/She is also fiscally responsible for the complete medical budget.

As a member of the leadership team-

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director in the formulation of shelter medical objectives, practices, plans and decisions that influence operations to ensure optimal health of animals.
  • Provides regular updates to the SARL Board of Directors regarding medical status, initiatives, and Community Medicine outreach programs.
  • Takes part in long term planning regarding shelter vision and objectives, staffing, facilities, including plans for new / remodeled buildings to best fit animal needs.
  • Develop an animal enrichment program and instill into the overall culture.
  • Identifies and helps to resolve challenges facing the shelter, internally and externally.
  • Treats people and animals with respect, contributes to effective teamwork; promotes intra-and inter-departmental cooperation; and fosters public relations beneficial to SARL.
  • Valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of New Hampshire
  • Valid DEA License
  • Shelter experience preferred
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with Pet Point software is desired
  • Experience with community medicine (spay/neuter services and clinics)
  • Experience in managing staff and budgets
  • Performs the duties of a Veterinarian of Record.
  • Coordinates and directs shelter medical operations and ensures sound veterinary medical practices.
  • Provides training for staff on techniques and animal health, oversees testing.
  • Leads the evaluation of shelter medical protocols.
  • Continually improves the medical management program.
  • Ensures high-quality medical care and services for shelter animals, including those in temporary foster care.
  • Focus on identification, treatment, and prevention of health problems.
  • Oversees the maintenance of shelter drug and supply inventory while meeting and maintaining DEA requirements
