Assistant Director

Manchester Historic Association

Founded in 1896, the Manchester Historic Association is an independent, 501 (c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization with the mission to collect, preserve and share the history of Manchester, New Hampshire, USA. The Association operates the Millyard Museum and the Research Center, both of which are open to the general public. The Association presents a variety of public programs including lectures, walking tours and concerts, and also school programs for students from third grade through college.

The Manchester Historic Association seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Assistant Director. The Assistant Director will report to the Executive Director and will manage both the daily operations and the collections of the Manchester Historic Association and Millyard Museum. Responsibilities will include:

  • Staff supervision to ensure that all duties and responsibilities are being completed effectively and efficiently;
  • Oversee finances of the Association by working with the bookkeeper, managing expenses, and preparing the annual budget with the Finance Committee;
  • In conjunction with other staff, manage the museum collections, specifically the acquisitions process, cataloging of objects, and organizing and maintaining the museum archives and storage;
  • Work collaboratively with other staff to plan, develop, and implement temporary exhibits and oversee updates of the permanent exhibit;
  • Work with staff and trustees in fundraising initiatives, including event planning and grant writing;
  • Assist with marketing efforts, and perform other duties as required to support the effective operation of the organization. 

The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, have superior organizational and interpersonal skills, take initiative, and be committed to being flexible and working collaboratively with a small staff. A bachelor’s degree is required, with a minimum of three years of museum or historic site experience and a passion for local history.
