Community Action Partnership of Strafford County is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization established in 1965 under the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act of 1964. We work with community, state and federal partners to assist children, families, low-income and elderly residents with their efforts to become or remain financially and socially independent through a variety of coordinated programs. Without the services provided by our agency, many local residents would be without a means to provide for their basic needs, including food, education, child care, utilities assistance, transportation, shelter and access to other services.

About Community Action Partnership of Strafford County

CAPSC has been serving Strafford County for the past 55 years by providing residents with basic needs, including food, education, childcare, utilities assistance, transportation, housing, emergency shelter and access to other services. The Agency has a budget of approximately 13.5 Million and is staffed by 147 team members. More information about their great work can be found at

CAPSC is funded by federal, state and local funds and supports 13 cities and towns in Strafford County. The agency also receives United Way grants, foundation and charitable grant funds, fees for service, private business donations and donations from individuals.

The Opportunity

CAPSC seeks an experienced fundraising professional to oversee a rapidly growing development operation in the end phase of a $2 million capital campaign, Open Doors, to support a new Innovation Service Center. 

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Advancement serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting CAPSC. In partnership with the CEO, this position is responsible for overseeing communication, marketing, and development activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build CAPSC's visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Director of Advancement will design and implement a comprehensive development plan with an emphasis on developing relationships with individuals, foundations and corporations to grow philanthropic support for the agency and ensure the successful completion to the campaign.  This position oversees a communications, marketing events position.

The position will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $13.5 million budget through the solicitation of major gifts, annual giving, special events, and corporate and foundation support.  This position will also collaborate with program leaders to ensure that federal and state grant applications reflect CAPSC’s core messaging.

The position will expand and diversify CAPSC's donor base/pipeline and work closely with key stakeholders, including campaign counsel and campaign committee members, to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the Director will work closely with the board of directors and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role.

It is expected that the amount raised by CAPSC will increase in future years as the position systematically and effectively strengthens the organization's overall development capacity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and partner with the CEO and board members on all major development initiatives
  • Create and implement a comprehensive advancement program that includes major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, foundation giving and corporate support, communications and special events
  • Research and write grants and cultivate funders using a relationship-management approach
  • Keep up to date with funding opportunities and trends to align CAPSC with major corporate and foundation support.
  • Develop relationships with key prospects and donors in the community through calls, personal visits, and other cultivation practices
  • Ensure the proper gift entry and tracking and donor information in Raiser’s Edge; provide analysis to CEO and senior leaders weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly
  • Develop and implement an engagement and stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors
  • Actively participates in professional organizations that will advance the growth and visibility of CAPSC.
  • Manage and motivate Communication and Events Manager who is responsible for data entry, website maintenance, and special events
  • Ensure that the social media strategy is being implemented and tracked to measure growth
  • Develop content for communications – newsletters, annual report, major donor executive updates, etc.
  • Ensure that all special events are planned and executed to advance CAPSC’s development and communications growth


  • 10-plus years of progressive development experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in growing philanthropic revenue year over year
  • Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with major donors, board members, corporations and foundations
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships
  • Goal and action-oriented and able to take the initiative without close supervision
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives
  • Comfortable being a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside CAPSC
  • High energy and passion for CAPSC’s mission is essential
  • Ability to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic development plan
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • Experience managing staff
  • Must be available to work nights and weekends
  • Bachelor’s degree required
