Direct Service Staff - Winter Shelter

Community Action Partnership of Strafford County is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization established in 1965 under the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act of 1964. We work with community, state and federal partners to assist children, families, low-income and elderly residents with their efforts to become or remain financially and socially independent through a variety of coordinated programs. Without the services provided by our agency, many local residents would be without a means to provide for their basic needs, including food, education, child care, utilities assistance, transportation, shelter and access to other services.

General Description

Assist in the daily operations of Seasonal Winter Shelter in a professional and hospitable manner. Enforce shelter rules and regulations, ensure a safe and respectful shelter environment.

Education and/or Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience in working or related field of social service and hospitality.
  • Prior experience working with children and the commitment to continue training.
  • Computer Literate.
  • Able to lift 25-40 lbs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Homeless Outreach staff to identify homeless clients who are eligible to obtain shelter and/or housing. Consistently uses interpersonal skills that are appropriate for individual styles, personalities, cultures, the nature of the work, and the environment in which the work is being done.
  • Complete hourly rounds
  • Answer telephone calls and referrals
  • Screen possible admissions for intakes and provide essential information and referrals
  • Complete intakes
  • Respond to residents/client needs
  • Orient new residents/clients
  • Regularly check to see that residents/clients are following expectations, getting along with their roommates and understand what services are available to them at Community Action Partnership of Strafford County
  • Provide conflict resolution using de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques. Uses appropriate problem-solving behavior to settle conflicts, including de-escalation and crisis intervention
  • Complete records and notes and all reporting requirements
  • Enforce guidelines in an appropriate manner
  • Identify and report safety concerns to the appropriate person
  • Work as a team with staff and residents in identifying resident issues. Assist in seeing that residents are pursuing available resources and complying with the rules
  • Attend weekly meetings with staff and other individuals related to serving the residents/clients
  • Attend and participate in other staff meetings and trainings as assigned
  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel when necessary..
  • Reliable source of transportation with 100/300 liability insurance coverage.
  • Physical strength/endurance/mobility to perform in a standard daily required work routine (i.e. walking, sitting, lifting, and driving to various sites as required).

Communication Skills

  • Be able to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and families on a regular basis.
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate instructions.
