Southern District YMCA

The Southern District YMCA has a long history of providing many communities throughout Southern New Hampshire with outstanding programs and services for youth. The Y’s Camp Lincoln is a traditional summer camp and outdoor education facility offering over 1500 campers the opportunity to engage in healthy activities. More than 750 children are enrolled in 15 before and after school sites through the Y’s child care programs. And just over two years ago, the Y opened the Exeter Area YMCA, a 33,000-square-foot multi-generational health and wellness center, which has seen membership growth that exceeds expectations. The Southern District YMCA is also currently exploring Phase 2 of a capital campaign to add a new aquatics facility to its Exeter location. The YMCA is currently seeking a new leader who will provide strong support for all aspects of the Y’s operations and strategic initiatives.

Service Area & Demographics: SDYMCA serves the NH towns of Brentwood, Danville, East
Kingston, Exeter, Fremont, Hampstead, Hampton, Hampton Falls, Kensington, Kingston, Newton,
North Hampton, Plaistow, Raymond, Seabrook, and Stratham.

History: In 1926, YMCA Camp Lincoln began as a summer camp on Kingston Lake. Today,
summers are full of 1,500 campers aged 3-15 and a robust counselor-in-training program for 14-
15-year old’s. Year-round activities at Camp Lincoln include outdoor education, team-building
programs and weekend rentals serving an additional 11,000 people. YMCA School Age Child Care
operates 15 before and after school programs meeting HEPA standards and state licensing
requirements for 750 students. Exeter Area YMCA opened its doors in September 2015 to an
eager community. The 33,000 square feet facility serves over 6,300 members, averaging 400

This position is for the following shifts: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 3-9.30pm

The Welcome Center Associate, working as part of the Membership Services Team, will deliver professional customer service to create a welcoming environment at the YMCA. The incumbent will additionally provide in-depth information in regards to the YMCA of Exeter, such as membership, program, activities, special events, etc. The incumbent will assist with the attraction and retention of members; including the processing of membership applications, monetary transactions, and information for members, participants and guests.

  • High School Diploma with one to three years of related experience in customer service, sales, or front-desk environment.
  • Ability to perform multiple duties while offering superb customer service.
  • Two or more years of working in a fast pace sales and or health industry setting.
  • YMCA Listen First certification/training a plus. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse of groups of people.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with membership software programs and/or database software a plus.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications are required.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit and stand for periods of time.
  • Ability to operate a computer with keyboard.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and use fingers, hands, to feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds.
  • Must be able to verbally communicate with staff and general public.
  • Must be able to hear sounds up to 300 feet away.

  • Consistently greet every person who enters and leaves the YMCA (by name, if known) in a professional and positive manner. 
  • Answer telephones in a prompt and courteous manner
  • Engage in active listening with members and program participants in order to build relationships, understand individual’s goals and interests, and take the initiative to ensure the member has a positive experience.
  • Conduct tours for potential new members, determining needs and offering solutions and options. 
  • Help potential members and current members experience the YMCA by introducing them to other staff and members.
  • Control access to the facility. Check-in members entering the building by scanning membership cards and obtaining proper identification of guests.
  • Register members and/or program participants if necessary, collecting the proper payment and verifying the accuracy of information on YMCA forms.  Balance all end of shift accounting reports and report any discrepancies to supervisor.
  • Be responsible for selling items at front desk – punch cards for Child Watch, water bottles, and other materials.  
  • Be knowledgeable about all YMCA programs in order to answer questions effectively. This includes being familiar with all current brochure information, upcoming events and other special activities. If information is not available, be responsible for obtaining the correct information, updating front desk resources and providing information to member
  • Maintain area in a clean and professional manner.
  • If opening or closing facility for the day, follow procedures to secure facility and/or prepare for public. 
  • Keep current with all required trainings and or certifications.
