Chief Financial Officer

McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center

The Discovery Center is an air and space museum in Concord NH, dedicated to NH space pioneers Christa McAuliffe and Alan Shepard, with indoor and outdoor exhibits, a planetarium, observatory, science store, café and a comprehensive menu of educational programs. Our mission is to inspire every generation to reach for the stars, through engaging, artful and entertaining activities that explore astronomy, aviation, Earth and space science.  


The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center seeks a hands-on, team-oriented financial professional for the position of Chief Financial Officer. This leadership position will be responsible for ensuring the Discovery Center’s financial health and sustainability by safeguarding and managing the Discovery Center’s financial and capital resources (in accordance with GAAP).   This position will also manage the Human Resource function of the organization and coordinate with the Director of Visitor Services on facilities management.    

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with experience in financial administration, budgeting, planning, inventory control and board reporting, who is comfortable with and able to complete all daily work including bookkeeping, reconciling accounts, entering payroll, etc.  Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.  

Requirements:

Education:  Certified Public Accountant or MBA from a recognized college or university.

Experience:  Two years of progressively responsible financial, administrative and human resource management experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting. Knowledge of charitable gift planning strategies and endowment management a plus. 

Or

Education:   Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university with major study in the fields of accounting, business, or management.  

Experience:  Four years of progressively responsible financial, administrative and human resource management experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting. Knowledge of charitable gift planning strategies and endowment management a plus.

Responsibilities:
  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct and evaluate the organization's fiscal function and performance, including managing the annual budget process.
     
  • Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, revenue streams, cash flow, return on investment for Discovery Center programs and revenue centers, financial reports and financial trends in order to support the Executive Director, Board and senior staff in decision-making and performance of their duties.
     
  • Play the leadership role in safeguarding and careful expenditure of all funds, including discovering and implementing opportunities for expense improvements/efficiencies and recommending changes to programs and pricing to optimize return on investment.
     
  • Develop and ensure adherence to policies for: Financial transactions including cash and check handling and PCI compliance; investment; accounting; risk management; grant reporting; legal compliance; and budgeting.
     
  • Guide and manage the overall provision of human resource services, policies and programs, including recruitment, employee orientation, development and training; hiring and termination processes; payroll; compensation and benefits administration; policy development and documentation; performance management and improvement systems; employee safety, welfare, wellness and health; and compliance with all local, state and federal laws.
     
  • Stay current in best practices for financial and human resource management; create and enforce processes and policies to prevent fraud and ensure adherence to legal requirements.
     
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to ensure that all legal financial filings and human resource filings are completed thoroughly, accurately and in a timely manner.
     
  • Identify needed insurance and contracts for goods and services, negotiate and oversee insurance and contracts including the outsourced café.
     
  • Support the Finance and Investment Committees and implement their decisions in coordination with the Executive Director.
     
  • Manage the custodian bank relationship and relationships with investment firms and consultants.
     
  • Assist donor relations with nontraditional gifts such as deferred giving, real estate and closely held securities.
     
  • Ensure the Discovery Center’s Information Technology is optimally functioning and meets the needs of staff and visitors, through oversight of IT contracts, planning and purchasing of IT hardware and software.
     
  • Manage the Discovery Center’s inventory of leased and owned equipment, exhibits, museum object collections and supplies, including directing inventory tracking and reporting.
     
  • Comply with all Discovery Center policies and applicable local, state & federal rules and regulations including, but not limited to, health and safety policies and all civil rights laws.
     
  • Other duties as assigned.
