We have been serving the needs of our citizens since 1965 when President Lyndon Johnson waged his “War on Poverty.” Over the years our programs have evolved and expanded to keep pace with the constantly changing needs of our citizens. The Cook is responsible for the daily production of nutritious, child-friendly meals which meet the requirements of the Child and Adult Care Food Program.  Under the supervision of the Head Start Health/Nutrition Services Manager, the cook produces breakfast and lunch daily for 17-34 children (depending on the size of the Head Start Center) and 3-10 staff.  Primary responsibilities include weekly grocery shopping, cooking, record keeping, kitchen organization and cleaning, training of kitchen volunteers, and supporting classroom nutrition and cooking activities. The Cook also attends and participates in weekly staff meetings and contributes to the overall success of the Head Start Center team. 

Requirements:
  • ServSafe Safety and Sanitation Certification preferred  
  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED.•
  • Certification in child first aid and CPR (program will provide upon hire)
  • Valid New Hampshire driver’s license, current adequate car insurance, proof of car insurance, and reliable transportation
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and able to lift up to 35 pounds
Responsibilities:
  • Ability to work without supervision
  • Maintain records and reports
  • Possession of basic skills and knowledge of quantity food production, including shopping, menu planning, record keeping, and food safety & sanitation 
  •  Ability to prepare nutritious, child-friendly meals
  • Ability to keep up with current developments and trends in nutrition and cooking.  May be acquired through academic, apprenticeship, or on the job training or a combination of these
  • Positive attitude a must
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure of deadlines for meal delivery.
  • Ability to follow instructions through a standard work process. Ability to check work for accuracy before completion of tasks
