Executive Director

Canterbury Shaker Village

Canterbury Shaker Village seeks a skilled and dynamic Executive Director to lead the Village while attracting new audiences and maximizing the use of its physical and intellectual assets.

Incorporated as a museum in 1969 by the last living Shakers in New Hampshire, Canterbury Shaker Village is a 694-acre National Historic Landmark with 25 restored Shaker buildings that hold collections of national significance. As the home of a Shaker community for 200 years (1792-1992), the Village preserves a unique record of the evolution of the Shakers from their beginnings in the 1700s through the changes in communal living, technology, and leadership that this utopian society experienced in the succeeding centuries.

Now marking its 50th Anniversary, the Village has achieved financial and programming momentum with new staff and board leadership. We seek to hire an Executive Director who can provide visionary leadership at a time of transition for the organization. Qualifying candidates will demonstrate:

• The ability to think strategically about how to use the Village’s considerable historical and physical assets to best advantage while exercising its stewardship responsibilities;
• The ability to coalesce support around new directions;
• Have at least five years of senior management experience in a non-profit or business organization with success in managing staff, finances and physical assets;
• Demonstrate success in fundraising, including donor cultivation and grant writing;
• Work effectively with multiple organizational stakeholders, including board and committee members, volunteers, community members, and peer institutions;
• Possess an advanced degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field – e.g. museum studies, historic preservation, business, natural resources management, or experiential education.

An organizational overview and detailed job description are available for interested candidates at www.shakers.org
