Membership & Volunteer Coordinator

McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center

The Discovery Center is an air and space museum in Concord NH, dedicated to NH space pioneers Christa McAuliffe and Alan Shepard, with indoor and outdoor exhibits, a planetarium, observatory, science store, café and a comprehensive menu of educational programs. Our mission is to inspire every generation to reach for the stars, through engaging, artful and entertaining activities that explore astronomy, aviation, Earth and space science.  


The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, detail-oriented person to join our team as Membership & Volunteer Coordinator. You will get to know our current volunteers and members, and play a key role in building our team and capacity to deliver on our mission by recruiting new members and volunteers, in the midst of our second decade as a nonprofit air and space museum inspired by NH Space Pioneers Christa McAuliffe and Alan Shepard.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree; or
  • Associates degree and one year's experience in volunteer or membership coordination/management; or
  • High school degree or equivalent and two years' experience in volunteer or membership coordination/management.
  • Experience in working with data bases, computer systems is required. A driver's license or access to transportation is required.
  • Position involves varied hours, including some night and weekend work, and some travel.
Responsibilities:
  1. Membership Program 

  • Serve as the Discovery Center’s primary contact person with Discovery Center members. Communicate with members orally, in writing and electronically, to provide member packets, cards, invitations and announcements, and to gather feedback from members on ideas for improvement and satisfaction with the program. 

  • Manage the Discovery Center’s member/donor database, including data entry, reporting, timely reminders for member renewals, pledge payments. Notify Director of Visitor Services, Director of Development and Executive Director timely, of all gifts, grants and donations received, and of new and renewing members; generate reports for them from the database as requested.  

  • Coordinate Annual Fund mailings. 

  • Train and coach Visitor Services Assistants to encourage visitors and program participants to become members. 

  • Build awareness among other Discovery Center staff and volunteers on the importance of membership and methods by which they can support and encourage people to become members. 

  • Develop and implement programs to increase and retain members, including special member events, recognition, special promotions, and on- and off-site marketing, so as to meet annual membership targets. 

  1. Volunteer Program 

  • Recruit, screen, orient, assign, track, and serve as a resource person and advocate for, Discovery Center volunteers, work-study students and interns.  

  • Coordinate staff efforts in volunteer recruitment, including advertising and publicity, and presentations at venues where volunteers are likely to be recruited, such as community and business groups, service clubs, student and parent groups, retiree associations and colleges. 

  • Interface with businesses and organizations to obtain short and long term volunteers for the Discovery Center. 

  • Interface with colleges and universities to obtain work-study students and interns for the Discovery Center and coordinate related contracts and paperwork including work-study timesheets. 

  • Work with Director of Visitor Services to develop and update Discovery Center volunteer policies, procedures, handbooks and guides, including rewards and benefits. 

  • Coach Discovery Center Team Leaders in volunteer retention, including: proper training, supervision, scheduling, acknowledgement of contributions, and evaluation of volunteers. 

  • Plan and coordinate an annual celebration of volunteers. 

  1. General  

  • Provide customer service at the Discovery Center’s reception desk, Science Store, and via email and phone, as needed. 

  • Assist the Director of Visitor Services as needed. 

  • Complies with all Discovery Center policies and applicable local, state & federal rules and regulations including, but not limited to, health and safety policies and all civil rights laws. 

  • Other duties as assigned.
