Evening Academic Skills/HiSET Preparation Teacher

Evening Academic Skills/HiSET Preparation Teacher, Portsmouth Adult Education Program – Tuesdays and Thursdays 5:30 – 8:00 pm; 5 hours/week, 35 weeks/year, September – June; $26.18 – $26.94/hour; non-profit part-time, temporary position, no benefits; BA/BS in Elementary Education or related field; two (2) or more years teaching reading, writing, math, social studies & science, preferably in an adult learning setting; ability to teach a range of basic to higher levels of skills; familiarity with College & Career Readiness Standards and contextualized learning applications with a student-centered approach; knowledge of and experience with high school equivalency testing, technology applications, and adult assessment tools preferred; must have own transportation; professional development opportunities available.  

Requirements:

Responsibilities:

Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to,

  • Coordinate with Portsmouth Adult Education staff to plan, implement and evaluate general curriculum focusing on reading, writing and math skills for daily instruction in the classroom setting, utilizing individual, small and large group instructional techniques.
  • Prepare and implement educational plans utilizing best practices in the context of developing necessary life skills, based upon student-centered approach to each learner's skills, interests and goals, as associated with the areas of family, work and community.
  • Provide appropriate, real-life materials and activities in accordance with College & Career Readiness Standards and contextualized learning, including appropriate remediation and compensation for those with learning challenges.
  • Ability to work with wide range of skill levels from most basic to more advanced skills in content areas (reading, writing, math, social studies, and science).  Adapt instruction to meet range of skills, abilities and needs of learners.
  • Make appropriate referrals to Program Counselor relative to learner support needs in the areas of family, work and community. Model self-advocacy with learners.  Advocate for learners and Portsmouth Adult Education Program as appropriate in the greater community. 
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and attend relevant staff development activities as is possible.        
  • Be in attendance and on time for all scheduled classes, or arrange for a substitute teacher with approval from the Program Manager.
