Donation Center Manager

LISTEN Community Services

LISTEN provides services and support to meet the critical needs of Upper Valley individuals and families through the operation of thrift stores.

Needs such as housing, food, warmth, mentoring and family support are not always “visible.” It takes a connected community to ensure that when our neighbors are in crisis, we have the resources to respond. We envision a community connected by and supportive of the process of “neighbor helping neighbor”. LISTEN does not rely on state or federal funding. We are fortunate to have generous, loyal donors, volunteers, and shoppers.

Manage Donation Center operations, including the receiving, processing and distribution of donated goods. Model and enforce value of donor and volunteer relationships. Build and maintain a positive workplace environment among all stakeholders.


1. Previous supervisory experience (5-7 years) in a retail or factory production environment required.

2. Excellent customer service skills.

3. Ability to maintain strict confidentiality concerning client and employment matters.

4. Responsible, respectful approach to the job and the team.

5. Analytical and problem solving skills

6. Strong verbal communication skills.

7. Ability to perform physically demanding work, including heavy lifting.


Personnel Management            

Supervise, train, and evaluate Donation Center staff. Schedule adequate staffing and supervision during receiving and sorting hours, including emergency coverage.  Identify staffing needs and recommend changes to the Retail Director. Communicate established personnel policies and operating procedures to Donation Center employees and volunteers while monitoring compliance. Make recommendations for procedural changes to the Retail Director.


Donor and Volunteer Relations

Supervise donations receiving area.  Ensure that staff and volunteers treat LISTEN donors in an appropriate and professional manner. This includes greeting and thanking donors, politely refusing items, providing donors with tax receipts for their charitable contributions, and treating donated items with respect throughout their journey to the retail sales floor. Judiciously balance the agency’s need to reduce waste expense with the need to maintain donor relations. Provide clear and consistent information to the public about donating to LISTEN.  In collaboration with Volunteer Coordinator(s) and Donation Center staff, locate appropriate tasks, orient, train, and help build a rewarding experience for volunteers.


Inventory Management

Supervise sorting and pricing of donations for either immediate sale, storage, recycling or waste.  Ensure fair and consistent pricing in accordance with pricing policies. Coordinate with Store Managers to provide needed inventory for each location. Coordinate with Warehouse Manager to prepare for special sales by requesting reserved inventory. Actively work to minimize and create procedural efficiencies of LISTEN’s non-sellable product. 


Facilities, Safety and Security               

Maintain sorting facility efficiency by seeking continuous improvements and implementing optimal design layouts. Ensure that safety and security measures are followed.  Provide a clean, safe, accessible work space for staff and volunteers. Identify needed maintenance projects and make recommendations to Retail Director or Executive Director.



Attend and participate in all staff meetings and training programs as requested. All other duties as assigned by the Retail or Executive Director.
