Unrestricted grant will help DALC expand capacity and educational outreach

Dover—Dover Adult Learning Center (DALC) has been awarded $30,000 through the Community Grants Program of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation. The organization recently made $3,280,000 in grants to support the operations of dozens of nonprofits serving New Hampshire communities.

According to Deanna Strand, executive director, DALC will receive $10,000 a year for the next three years and will use the unrestricted funds to build long term sustainability. “We will increase capacity, build infrastructure and tackle organizational challenges.”

DALC will be launching a marketing effort to reach new populations including individuals who already have a high school credential but may be struggling in low-wage jobs. “We can help builds skills, advise them on career options and help them find resources to continue their education,” Strand says. “We will also reach out to employers with ways to upskill their current workforce and help build a pipeline.”

Another area that DALC has been working in and hopes to expand is helping non-native speakers who come to the U.S. with advanced education but need industry-specific English skill-building. The organization will also seek to be a bridge between basic education students and area vocational training opportunities.

In 2017, the Foundation announced that its Community Grants program, through which qualified nonprofit organizations apply for funding, would be dedicated to providing multi-year operating support starting in 2018.

“New Hampshire’s nonprofits do heroic work that improves the quality of life for everyone in the state,” said Katie Merrow, vice president of community impact at the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation.

“The nonprofit sector does amazing work under often challenging conditions. And nonprofits are always being asked to do more and innovate more,” Merrow said. “They need this kind of flexible capital that helps them meet their important missions.”
