Lori Real Honored with National Henry Fiumelli Patient Advocate Award

Bow – The National Association of Community Health Centers announced today that Lori H. Real, MHA, chief operating officer of Bi-State Primary Care Association, will be awarded the Henry Fiumelli Patient Advocate Award at its national conference in Charleston, SC, this month. The award recognizes an outstanding staff member, among 54 primary care associations nationwide, whose work has improved access to quality primary care for vulnerable populations in their state(s). “As the award qualification reads “a person who exemplifies passion and commitment to improving the care and quality of life for health center patients” fits Lori Real to a tee. Lori has had a long career of improving access to quality primary care for vulnerable populations in both Vermont and New Hampshire and we are thrilled that the NACHC has recognized Lori for her valued and tremendous accomplishments,” said Bi-State’s executive director, Tess Stack Kuenning, MS, CNS, RN.

Real supervises a staff of 20 employees in NH and VT, overseeing marketing and development, state public policy, workforce recruitment and retention, finance, human resources, and information technology. She directs planning and programming for Bi-State’s 34 nonprofit member organizations. Ms. Real’s reaction to the award was, “I am proud to share this award with my colleagues that work so hard every day to implement our shared vision of healthy individuals and communities with quality health care for all. It is only through our collective team work that we have been able to be successful.”

Real is a former director of the offices of Health Planning and Medicaid, and Planning and Research, at the NH Department of Health and Human Services, and a former VP of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of NH. She earned a Masters of Health Administration from the University of NH and is a 1997 Leadership NH associate. Real grew up in Newbury, VT, and resides in Henniker, NH.

The Henry Fiumelli Patient Advocate Award was created in honor of the former executive director of the Pennsylvania Forum for Primary Health Care, who died unexpectedly in 2007. Henry was a warrior and consummate advocate for Community Health Centers.

Established in 1986, Bi-State Primary Care Association is a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c) 3 charitable organization. With offices in Vermont and New Hampshire, Bi-State works with federal, state, and regional health policy organizations, foundations, and payers to develop strategies, policies, and programs that provide and support community-based primary and preventive health care services in medically under-served areas.
