Keene Family YMCA Development and Community Impact Director Honored as Extraordinary Woman

Keene – The Keene Family YMCA is pleased to announce that Marj Droppa, Development and Community Impact Director, has been named as one of the Monadnock Region’s Extraordinary Women. Marj’s commitment to the YMCA and our community is evident every day.

When learning about receiving this recognition, Marj said:
“I’m incredibly honored to be included alongside such an amazing group of women. To me, this award is extra special because it embodies the spirit of the YMCA: to help others in our community, especially those most in need.”

Marj came to our region as a professor at Keene State College, and quickly established herself as someone who was invested in working to solve many of the challenges facing our community. She encouraged her students to complete their research projects on issues that negatively impact our community and to intern at non-profit human service organizations throughout the region. She left Keene State to become the project director for Impact Monadnock (IM), an early childhood initiative that aims to ensure every child in southwest NH – regardless of background or socio-economic status – has the skills and opportunities to succeed in life. Child Welfare was identified as one of the foundational areas of community need in the Monadnock Region. She established the IM’s Business Ambassadors – a group launched with 10 business leaders in the community – that led to several area businesses embracing family-friendly workplace policies and a call for greater investment in early brain development so all children could have the “best start in life”. This led to Marj being invited by statewide organizations to represent the region as a presenter at annual conferences as a thought leader on how to achieve social equity for youth by collaborating with the business community.

Marj was also a Keene Family YMCA board member. She joined the Y staff team in 2017 as the Development and Community Impact Director. She was asked to take on this role because of her unwavering commitment to the community and the mission of the Y. Her success at the Y is evident in the increase in the number of community members and organizations involved and engaged in YMCA activities – from co-sponsoring community impact events, to raising funds to ensure Y access to all who need it, to engaging all of our community in the YMCA vision of “A Better Us”.

Women doing noteworthy work in the area are nominated by Keene Sentinel readers, and then those to be honored are selected by a group of community judges. Marj joins 13 other women in receiving this honor. The honorees are Pat Barber, Kathryn Blair, Debra Bowie, Stacy Cibula, Marj Droppa, Lisa Egan Cook, Lisa Hix, Emily Kerylow, Kathryn Kindopp, Suelaine Poling, Elizabeth Sayre, Erin Scaggs, Tamara Sy, and Norma Wyman.

The Keene Sentinel will host a reception to honor these women on August 30, 2018 at the Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College.
