New Housing Development for Homeless Families
Manchester – Families in Transition (FIT), a Manchester, Concord and Dover, NH-based homeless services provider, and Housing BeneFITs, a nonprofit started by FIT to improve the supply and quality of affordable housing in New Hampshire, held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, August, 29, to celebrate the Hayward Street Housing Development which will consist of 6 two-bedroom apartments. The Facility will serve parents and their children who are experiencing homelessness.
Representatives from Families in Transition, Housing BeneFITs, Office of United States Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Office of United States Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter, City of Manchester, Community Development Finance Authority, Department of Housing and Urban Development, and other community members attended and participated in the ceremony. The construction of the facility was funded by the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development, Community Development and Finance Authority, and the City of Manchester.
According to Judy Bergeron, Housing BeneFITs Board Chair and Families in Transition Board member, “In 2012, Families in Transition had over 7,000 requests for assistance by families and individuals experiencing homelessness. We were able to help less than 10 percent of those people. We are very grateful to have this new facility to help meet the increasing need for this type of housing and assistance in the community.”
Families in Transition is a nonprofit organization that provides safe, affordable housing and comprehensive social services to individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, enabling them to gain self-sufficiency and respect. In 2009, FIT established Housing BeneFITs, an independent nonprofit and Community Based Housing Organization to improve the life for low- and moderate-income residents by increasing the supply and quality of affordable housing in New Hampshire. FIT also owns and operates two thrift stores in Manchester and Concord, NH, as well as a commercial cleaning company, FIT Cleaning Solutions, all of which serve as economic engines to help pay for services that FIT provides.
