Breathe New Hampshire Receives Funding from NHLBI’s COPD Learn More Breathe Better® Program

Funds to Be Used for COPD Outreach and Education

Manchester - Breathe New Hampshire was recently awarded $20,000 from the National, Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the National Institutes of Health, to help further the goals of the COPD National Action Plan. This subcontract is part of the NHLBI’s COPD Learn More Breathe Better® program and aims to conduct education and awareness activities around chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and its risk factors.

“This subcontract is an exciting opportunity for us to raise awareness of COPD,” said Allyssa Thompson, director of programs for Breathe New Hampshire. “We are committed to advancing the goals of the COPD National Action Plan and are thrilled to receive NHLBI’s support.”

For this award, Breathe NH is creating resources for primary care providers (PCPs) to help their patients quit smoking.

“Many doctors don’t know how to help people who want to quit. We’ll provide resources, including information on combining therapies, counseling, and how to better access the NH Quitline (800-QUIT-NOW), so they can set their patients up for success,” said Thompson.

COPD is a leading cause of death in the United States, affecting 16 million Americans and millions more who have not yet been diagnosed. It is primarily caused by smoking. Over time, this lung disease can affect the ability to breathe and can lead to long-term disability. Although COPD is not curable, it is highly treatable, and early diagnosis can lead to an improved quality of life.

Breathe NH is a 102-year-old public health nonprofit and the only one in the Granite State focused solely on preventing, eliminating, and improving the quality of health for those with lung disease.

Everyone has an important role to play in the success of the COPD National Action Plan. Breathe NH is proud to be one of the six community partner subcontractors selected nationwide to help address the issue of COPD at the local level.
