The Democratization of Philanthropy: Its Past and Present Contradictions and its Future Promise

We hear a lot of talk these days about the democratization of philanthropy; by some accounts, it’s the most urgent task facing the sector, especially given the mounting claims that elite philanthropy and democracy are fundamentally incompatible. And yet the democratic imperative in philanthropy can—and, over the last century, has—pointed to a wide range of reforms and a wide range of values. To democratize philanthropy has meant offering certain philanthropic opportunities to an ever wider circle of givers; it’s meant expanding our understanding of what constitutes philanthropy and who gets to claim the identity of a philanthropist; and it’s meant reallocating philanthropic resources and power. Often, it’s meant some combination of these. In fact, the democratization of philanthropy has meant so much that it risks meaning very little. In this talk, I’ll try to impose some clarity on the idea but tracing its history, from the birth of mass giving at the start of the twentieth century to the present moment, with its promise of participatory philanthropy. I’ll explore the tensions between its various strands, and discuss what they suggest about the limits of the forces of democratization on the sector.


Del Bouafi

Del BouafiDel Bouafi is a Vice President of State Street Global Advisors and a Senior Portfolio Manager in the firm’s Investment Solutions Group. She is responsible for developing and implementing tactical and strategic multi-asset class solutions for institutional clients. Del is a member of the portfolio management team dedicated to SSGA’s Charitable Asset Management (CAM) where she is responsible for setting asset allocation strategy and managing charitable gift portfolios for all CAM clients.

Del has been working in the investment industry since 2001 and has held various roles in her 18 year tenure at State Street Global Advisors. Her most recent role was as member of the Global Active Quantitative Equities team covering both developed market and emerging market equities. In that role, she was responsible for portfolio management, research, product development and positioning across multiple strategies within this group.

Del earned her bachelor’s degree in Finance from Bentley University.

Melody S. Chartier, CFP

Melody S. Cartier, CFPMelody S. Chartier is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional who has devoted her professional life to donor and client services. She is currently the Associate Director for Gift Planning at UMass Amherst with a focus on marketing, estate administration, stewardship and managing a donor portfolio. She joined UMass in October 2018 from New York city where she was the Financial Planning Services Manager at MMBB Financial Services. She is a subject matter expert on retirement income planning, Social Security and clergy taxes. Her experience in higher education includes service as the Director of the Annual Fund at Andover Newton Theological School at Yale Divinity School and as the Director of Affinity and Multicultural programs in Alumni Relations at Brown University. Melody is an ordained minister and her pastoral experience was as the Associate Pastor at The Community Church of Wilmette, Illinois. She received her Master of Divinity degree from Colgate Rochester Divinity School and her B.A. from Eastern University. In her spare time, Melody enjoys hiking with her dog and going to the beach.

Jay Frost

Jay FrostJay Frost has, over the last three decades, worked to identify and pursue billions in fundraising opportunities for thousands of charitable organizations around the world.

Jay is one of the leading voices in the field. He has been recognized as one of America’s Top 10 Fundraising Experts by Philanthropy Media, one of the Top Eight Fundraising Influencers by Elevation Media, and one of the Top Thirteen Excellent Fundraising Consultants by Double the Donation.

A popular speaker, Jay has addressed hundreds of meetings in the US, UK, Canada, Asia, and the Middle East. He has been described as “a master of innovation” and “a beacon of light and inspiration” whose “humor filled and thought provoking” talks, training and consults leave groups “energized and informed.”

Jay is also a consultant to nonprofits and an advisor to companies serving the philanthropic marketplace. He advises organizations at all stages of their efforts, from startup through capital campaigns.

Benjamin Soskis

Benjamin SoskisBenjamin Soskis is a Research Associate in the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute and the co-founder and co-editor of HistPhil, a web publication dedicated to the history of the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. He has also served as a consultant to the Open Philanthropy Project’s History of Philanthropy program. Soskis is a frequent contributor to the Chronicle of Philanthropy and the Atlantic; his writing on philanthropy has also appeared in the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and the Guardian, among other publications. He is the co-author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic: A Biography of the Song that Marches On (Oxford, 2013), a finalist for the Lincoln Prize, and of Looking Back at 50 Years of US Philanthropy (Hewlett Foundation, 2016), as well as a chapter, “A History of Associational Life, Voluntary Action and the Nonprofit Sector in the United States,” in the forthcoming The Nonprofit Sector: A Research Handbook, Third Edition (Stanford, 2019). Soskis has taught at the George Washington University and the University of California, Washington Center and received his PhD in American history from Columbia University.

Daniel Stadler, MD

Daniel Stadler, MDDaniel Stadler, MD, is the Director of Geriatrics at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Geisel SOM. He is a faculty member at the Dartmouth Centers for Health and Aging and Medical Director at three local Skilled Nursing Facilities. He received his MD from Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in 1998 and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in 2001. Prior positions include Medical Director and primary care physician at Mt. Ascutney Hospital, Vice President for Hospice at the Visiting Nurse and Hospice of VT/NH and Director for the Section of Palliative Medicine at DHMC. He has a long standing interest in the care of the frail adult.
