Description

Job Title: Executive Director 

Reports to: Board of Directors 

 

Job Purpose: 

The Executive Director is responsible for the general oversight of MDRA including the relationship with southern dog rescues and is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Participate with the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization. 

  • Assess and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization. Represent the organization at community activities to enhance the organization's community profile. Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization. 

  • Maintain consistent schedule of working at the facility with dogs at least monthly.  Expectation that Exec Dir will be on site for regular work hours when dogs are in the rescue. 

  • Be available for Adoption nights on a consistent basis. 

  • Process returns/surrenders (making decisions about the dog coming into rescue, any refunds, and communicating with owner and appropriate support staff). 

  • Provide support to adopters regarding behavior. 

  • Respond to emergencies regarding medical or behavioral issues with our dogs in foster or adoptive homes. 

 

Human Resources: 

  • Establish and maintain a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations. 

  • Work with Assistant Director, if needed, to recruit, interview and select staff. 

  • Ensure that staff receives an orientation to the organization and that training is provided as needed. Conduct Annual Performance Review. On an on-going basis coach and mentor staff as needed to improve performance or to address performance issues. 

  • Discipline staff, up to and including termination of staff, when necessary using appropriate and legally defensible procedures. 

  • Maintain positive relationship with pet professionals in NH, trainers, boarding kennels, veterinarians 

 

Finance: 

  • Approve expenditures within the authority as delegated by the Board. 

  • Review and pay invoices. 

  • Participate in fundraising activities as needed.

Qualifications: 

Customer service, managerial, basic knowledge of Nonprofit rules and regulations, dog savvy, advanced knowledge of dog behavior. 

 

Working Conditions: 

This role may include irregular hours particularly during transport quarantine time, fundraising, community relations or adoption events and/or surrender situations. It involves working with animals which can be unpredictable. Animals may be in poor health, have behavioral issues which may require special consideration and treatment. There is a bite risk when working with any live animals. I

 

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Must be able to bend, crawl and reach into crates to clean, lift dogs and move equipment. May be required to be on your feet for long periods of time.
