Description

The New Hampshire Writers’ Project (NHWP) supports the development of individual writers and encourages an audience for literature in our state. We are a nonprofit literary arts organization funded by its members as well as organizations and businesses that support our region’s writers and literary heritage. The organization is run by a Board of Trustees and committees of highly skilled individuals. We are currently seeking to hire a part-time bookkeeper to become a valued member of our staff and literary community.

PART-TIME BOOKKEEPER

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required:

  • The ideal candidate will have experience working in the non-profit sector and will ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Have the ability to maintain records according to generally accepted accounting principles, including recording general journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, processing donations, reconciliation of bank statements, and generating balance sheets.
  • Prepare quarterly financial statements, budget reports, and accounts receivable reports with pie charts.
  • Collaborate with the Board with annual budgeting, and provide ongoing financial strategy and forecasting.
  • Participate in activities needed to support the management functions of the organization such as the NHWP’s Planning and Strategic Meeting.
  • Attend the annual conference to assist with the sale and monitoring of merchandise. 
  • Timely prepare annual 1099’s

QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS

As per the NHWP Bookkeeping, an individual must:

  • Be a self-starter and possess the ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Have a strong knowledge of bookkeeping practices and procedures for nonprofits.
  • Possess an understanding of non-profit financial management including grant tracking.
  • Familiarity with tax filings for non-profits (Form 990) is a plus
  • Be able to perform essential duties in a satisfactory and timely manner.  
  • Have good organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Possesses conscientious work habits.
  • Be reliable.
  • The individual must work well with the Board of Trustees and other individuals, which includes work-study students and volunteers.
  • Commit to working monthly hours to reconcile monthly statements 

 

Education and Experience

  • A minimum of five (5) years of bookkeeping experience is required.
  • A high school diploma or equivalency is required, with accounting-related college coursework or an associate’s degree in accounting preferred.
  • Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts as applied to accounting such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency with the online version of Intuit QuickBooks accounting software.
  • Proficiency with CRM software is a big plus. NHWP uses NEON. 
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Office applications specifically with proficiency in Excel and learn new software, as needed.
  • Experience with mobile payment applications and hardware
