Community Action Partnership of Strafford County is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization established in 1965 under the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act of 1964. We work with community, state and federal partners to assist children, families, low-income and elderly residents with their efforts to become or remain financially and socially independent through a variety of coordinated programs. Without the services provided by our agency, many local residents would be without a means to provide for their basic needs, including food, education, child care, utilities assistance, transportation, shelter and access to other services.

Overview of Position

This is a new position, created to support the operation of the winter warming center, located in Somersworth. The Shelter Coordinator will report directly to the Shelter Manager and will assist with supervising center staff and volunteers. The Shelter Coordinator will also work closely with the Shelter Manager and CAPSC Advancement Team on identifying needs, requesting, and accepting donations of food and supplies. This position will work closely with the Shelter Manager to ensure adequate staffing levels and maintain a safe and supportive environment for our clients.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Train, supervise, and schedule paid and volunteer staff
  • Work with Shelter Manager to identify and schedule staff training opportunities  
  • Maintain adequate coverage during activation to ensure the safety and welfare of clients  
  • Participate in on-call rotation for after-hours consultation, and/or shift coverage as necessary  
  • Enforce center policies and procedures  
  • Act as primary liaison to the general community in regard to volunteering and donations 
  • Request, manage, and receive any needed donations (food, supplies, etc.) 
  • Work with the Shelter Manager and other staff to ensure regulatory compliance  
  • Work alongside and perform all duties assigned to Direct Service staff  
  • Answer telephone, providing accurate and reliable information, making referrals as appropriate, and following up as required.  
  • Maintain data and prepare reports of services as required.  
  • Travel to and participate in various information sharing/gathering meetings as needed   
  • Consistently uses interpersonal skills that are appropriate for individual styles, personalities, cultures, the nature of the work, and the environment in which the work is being done  
  • Respond as appropriate to emergency situations and complaints.  
  • Participate in the team approach to planning and problem solving.  
  • Other activities as needed to ensure the success of the program.  
  • Other duties as assigned by the Shelter Manager.  

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assist in the hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of center staff and volunteers

  • Speak to community groups to explain and interpret agency purposes, programs, and policies.   
  • Monitor and evaluate program compliance and procedures in accordance with relevant funding streams and CAP policies in coordination with the DPO and Contracts and Data Quality Manager.  
  • Act as a resource to agency staff and other community programs regarding the interpretation of program-related federal, state, and county regulations and policies related to community services programming.

Position job requirements/qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with major in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or Guidance and Counseling preferred.  An individual with an associate degree and a minimum of four years’ experience working with homeless individuals or in volunteer coordination or similar programming may apply. Other combinations of relevant education and experience will be considered.   

Additional Information

This position is seasonal. The Warming Center will run from November 29, 2021 through April 1, 2022. The Shelter Coordinator will be hired prior to the opening date and may extend beyond the closing date.
