Senior Accountant

Responsible for senior level accounting and reporting functions with day-to day oversight of various delegated finance functions. Perform month-end general journal entry preparation, general ledger account reconciliations, ongoing grant reporting and billing, payroll processing, financial statement preparation and analysis. Preparation and review of quarterly and annual accounting activities including assisting with year-end closing, annual audits and budgeting. Responsible for grant financial oversight and reporting in accordance with applicable regulations and requirements.

Responsibilities:

• Participate in and assist in the oversight of the monthly closing process including preparation and review of monthly journal entries for a variety of accounts for completeness and accuracy. Ensure that the team meets closing deadlines.
• Assist with payroll processing and related functions, ensuring compliance with all laws and regulations.
• Assist with review and support of the accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts and fixed assets functions.
• Oversee federal, state and private grant accounting responsibilities including budget preparation, expense tracking, drawdowns and monthly/quarterly financial reports to grantors in compliance with applicable regulations and practices and periodic follow-up/updates to effected departments.
• Generate accurate monthly reports and analysis under tight deadlines to meet reporting needs of the department and other areas as needed.
• Work with leadership across programs to provide meaningful financial feedback including budget variation analysis to assist in budget management efforts.
• Assist as needed in the preparation of monthly Board financial reports.
• Oversee and coordinate the annual audit.
• Assist with banking and cash management activities as needed.
• Assist the Chief Financial Officer with the annual budget, development of accounting policies and procedures and other miscellaneous projects and activities.
• Take initiative to research, problem solve and follow through on final resolution of issues with minimal supervision.
• Train and mentor team staff.
• Perform other tasks as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.
• Participate in general GSIL events and activities.
• Maintain professional knowledge/skills by reviewing professional literature and engaging in continuous learning.
• Support and uphold GSIL policies and procedures, workplace regulations and safety procedures.

Education/Training:
• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in accounting, finance or related field.
• Minimum of three years of experience in a non-profit setting at a senior level with a solid understanding of daily operations of a finance team including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing, payroll, grants and general accounting functions.
• Demonstrated ability to carry out tasks necessary to meet job responsibilities with minimal supervision.
• Ability to deal with sensitive information in a highly confidential manner.
• Knowledge of applicable accounting standards and practices.
• Knowledge of federal and state grant and contract regulations and requirements highly preferred.
• Advanced knowledge and experience using Excel.
• Excellent customer service skills to provide professional and timely support to our internal and external users of financial information.

Experience
• Working knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting and general business demonstrated by a high quality of work.
• Knowledge of federal and state grant regulatory requirements including budget preparation, oversight and reporting.
• Knowledge of the Abila MIP accounting system.
• Ability to understand and analyze complex accounting processes and make recommendation to improve efficiency, effectiveness and problem solve.
• High level of attention to detail and the ability to think critically to identify issues.
• Ability to perform and oversee as needed day-to-day work of department staff and work effectively with other areas within the organization to foster collaboration with areas of responsibility.
• Ability to work well under pressure with tight deadlines with minimal supervision while maintaining accuracy of work and high professional standards.
