Warming Center Staff

Community Action Partnership of Strafford County is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization established in 1965 under the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act of 1964. We work with community, state and federal partners to assist children, families, low-income and elderly residents with their efforts to become or remain financially and socially independent through a variety of coordinated programs. Without the services provided by our agency, many local residents would be without a means to provide for their basic needs, including food, education, child care, utilities assistance, transportation, shelter and access to other services.

Overview of Position

This is a new position and will be based at the Willand Pond Warming Center, located in Somersworth. Center staff will report directly to the Shelter Manager and will assist in the daily operations of the Warming Center and Day Center in a professional and hospitable manner. Staff will enforce center rules and regulations while ensuring a safe and respectful center environment.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Act as primary staff on duty when warming center is activated due to extreme cold and/or weather conditions.
  • When the center is not activated, provide support at CAP Day center as needed
  • Assist clients through the intake process, rule review, and bed assignment
  • Support clients with scheduling and performing laundry and showers as needed
  • Orient new clients
  • Complete regular rounds to ensure safety
  • Answer telephone calls and referrals
  • Manage center laundry
  • Respond to client needs
  • Provide transportation via Center van between the center and local bus stop daily
  • Regularly check to see that clients are following expectations, getting along with other clients, and understand what services are available to them at Community Action Partnership of Strafford County
  • Provide conflict resolution using de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques. Uses appropriate problem-solving behavior to settle conflicts, including de-escalation and crisis intervention
  • Complete records and notes and all reporting requirements
  • Enforce guidelines in an appropriate manner
  • Identify and report safety concerns to the appropriate person
  • Work as a team with staff, volunteers, and residents in identifying issues. Assist in seeing that clients are pursuing available resources and complying with the rules
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings as assigned
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience working in social services or related field
  • Prior experience working with unsheltered individuals and the commitment to continue training.
  • Computer literate.
  • Able to lift 25-40 lbs.

  • Physical strength/endurance/mobility to perform in a standard daily required work routine (i.e., walking, sitting, lifting, and driving to various sites as required).

Communication Skills

  • Be able to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, clients, and community members on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to be contacted outside of work to be informed of center activation
  • Good communication skills and ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate instructions.

Additional Information

This position is seasonal. The Warming Center will run from November 29, 2021, through April 1, 2022. The Community Coordinator will be hired prior to the opening date and may extend beyond the closing date.

Employment Screening

Valid Driver's License and insured vehicle (100/300 minimum coverage) for use on the job or acceptable alternative, driving record check, criminal record check, randomized drug screening.

Head Start, Early Head Start, Childcare, and Home Visiting Programs are also subject to the following: Head Start and childcare licensing requires a criminal record check and finger printing to be completed prior to employment. An initial physical examination record must be obtained within 60 days of hire, updated every three years and kept on file with Human Resources. An initial driving record check will be conducted. License information will also be submitted to the agency’s automobile insurance carrier.
