Development Director

HAVEN Violence Prevention and Support Services

HAVEN, formerly known as A Safe Place and SASS officially merged in July of 2015 becoming the largest violence prevention and support services agency in NH. We are dedicated to addressing public health through violence prevention and improving the well-being of children and families. Preventing abuse and providing support for those impacted by domestic and sexual violence can lead to healthier and more secure children and adults. Our mission is to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking and to support and empower women, men, youth and families to heal from abuse and rebuild their lives. Through a 24-hour client service support program and a Safe Kids Strong Teens K-12 Prevention education program, this organization provides services to individuals and families throughout Rockingham and Strafford Counties.

Job Description

The Development Director provides mission-driven leadership and strategy in all aspects of fundraising including campaigns, events, communications, prospect research, and donor stewardship. The Director works closely with Executive Director, staff, Development Committee and Board of Directors to promote the organization’s mission, and values and grow the base of donor support.


  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in development working collaboratively with an ED to achieve fundraising goals, including experience in managing major donor relationships
  • Proven track record directly soliciting and securing major gifts, and the ability to develop effective cultivation and solicitation strategies with the ED and Board members
  • Experience in designing and implementing individual donor programs to increase donor retention
  • Research-informed skills in copywriting for a donor audience
  • Strong personal/professional network in the Greater Seacoast area
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to bring out the best in others, work effectively in teams, and facilitate joint planning and problem solving while working collaboratively and respectfully
  • Commitment to the relentless pursuit of excellence and to ongoing learning and growth as a development professional
  • Good judgment, attention to detail, dependability and follow-through, and an ability to handle confidential information with discretion
  • Experience with Little Green Light or equivalent donor software


  • Develop and execute a comprehensive multi-year Fundraising Development Plan with research-based strategies to increase giving and participation levels from donors and prospects in all fundraising areas including annual fund, major gifts, and planned giving.
  • Develop and execute strategies to increase corporate and foundation giving.
  • Cultivate, solicit and steward all annual fund donors and prospects, including developing strategies and goals for increased giving and writing appeal and thank you letters.
  • Identify research, cultivate, solicit and steward major donors and/or prospective major donors to obtain their new, renewed, sustained or increased support; thank them for their past support, and report to them on how their gifts have been used.
  • Design and coordinate a variety of cultivation and recognition events for major donors and prospects.
  • Utilize and maintain the donor database.
  • Work with Development Committee, Board of Directors, key volunteers, and other staff as appropriate, to plan and execute fundraising activities.
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors and support board members in their active fundraising role.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of HAVEN programs and activities so as to maximize donor participation in and support of the organization.
  • Oversee and develop publications and communications that support annual giving and that are aligned with overall agency goals and objectives.
  • Develop donor-centric pitch materials, including case for support, multi-media, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.



Status of Position: Full-time Exempt – Benefits Eligible
