Head Start Coaching Coordinator

Community Action Partnership of Strafford County is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization established in 1965 under the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act of 1964. We work with community, state and federal partners to assist children, families, low-income and elderly residents with their efforts to become or remain financially and socially independent through a variety of coordinated programs. Without the services provided by our agency, many local residents would be without a means to provide for their basic needs, including food, education, child care, utilities assistance, transportation, shelter and access to other services.

General Description

Under the direction of the HS Senior Program Manager, provides coordination for the HS coaching structure and direct practice-based coaching to the center-based HS classrooms staff. Ensures that teachers are getting the direction and support needed to successfully provide safe, inclusive, developmentally appropriate, rich learning experiences that support school readiness for preschoolers.



  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or Bachelor’s degree in a related field with three (3) years’ experience teaching young children.
  • Intermediate computer literacy including: database management (TSG, Child Plus) and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are a must. Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic environment and adapt to changing needs and priorities is also required for this position.
  • Expectation that successful candidate will attend training and become reliable in designated teaching practices assessment tool on a schedule developed in collaboration with the HS Senior Program Manager.
  • Expectation that successful candidate will attend training and become proficient in Practice-based Coaching on a schedule developed in collaboration with the HS Senior Program Manager.
  • Expectation that successful candidate will attend trainings needed as determined by the HS Senior Program Manager.


  • Previous Early Head Start or Head Start experience. Experience in practice-based coaching or other work with adult learners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Develop and maintain positive, supportive relationships with HS classroom staff.
  • Achieve and maintain reliability in teaching practices assessment tool specific to CAPSC Head Start.
  • Develop a schedule for conducting classroom observations as a foundation for determining needs.
  • Responsible for the coordination and oversight of the practice-based coaching system for the program. This includes working with identified practice-based coaches to implement TLC in small groups as well as peer to peer coaching.
  • Engage in Practice-based coaching to develop individual coaching plans, with specific goals and areas for growth identified which are based on classroom/teacher observations and in partnership with the coach.
  • Follow-up on and be responsive to individual teaching staff requests for coaching services and document nature of training provided.
  • Provide constructive feedback and support to teaching staff for learning and growth. This may include modeling, activities, reading material, or other resources as needed to guide learning.
  • Orient new teaching staff around practice-based coaching and the role it plays in our program.
  • Coordinate with existing practice-based coaches to plan and present small group workshops on relevant child development topics.
  • Promote best practices in early childhood development and assessment based on Head Start Performance Standards, Creative Curriculum, State Childcare Licensing Guidelines, and other prescribed curricula used by the HS Program.
  • Use reflective practice and additional strategies as needed to promote positive outcomes for the teaching staff and the children they work with.
  • Travel as needed between HS sites.
  • Continue professional growth by participating in ongoing; ECE education, training programs, workshops/conferences as budget allows, reading articles and professional journals pertaining to ECE and HS. Distribute latest research based resources and materials to teaching staff.
  • Participate in various meetings to include program meetings and collaborative meetings with other agencies as assigned.
  • Report any concerns for safety, health, or non-compliance to the HS Education Manager, the HS Senior Program Manager and/or Child & Family Services Director. Situations that constitute imminent safety concerns for children should be reported immediately.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by supervisors that are reasonably within the scope of duties listed above.
  • Develop concise documentation and engage in data collection and analysis as needed.

  • Good communication skills and ability to follow and give clear verbal and written instructions.

Employment Screening

Valid Driver's License and insured vehicle (100/300 minimum coverage) for use on the job or acceptable alternative, driving record check, criminal record check, randomized drug screening.

Head Start, Early Head Start, Childcare, and Home Visiting Programs are also subject to the following: Head Start and child care licensing requires a criminal record check and finger printing to be completed prior to employment. An initial physical examination record, including a TB screening must be obtained within 60 days of hire, updated every three years and kept on file with Human Resources. If a TB screening indicates high risk, results of a TB test must be kept on file including any treatment received. An initial driving record check will be conducted. License information will also be submitted to the agency’s automobile insurance carrier.
