Community Action Partnership of Strafford County is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization established in 1965 under the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act of 1964. We work with community, state and federal partners to assist children, families, low-income and elderly residents with their efforts to become or remain financially and socially independent through a variety of coordinated programs. Without the services provided by our agency, many local residents would be without a means to provide for their basic needs, including food, education, child care, utilities assistance, transportation, shelter and access to other services.

General Description

The Cook is responsible for planning the menu using approved meals for the Child & Family Services Programs, purchasing and preparing food in a safe and sanitary manner. Responsible for ensuring compliance of Head Start performance standards and USDA guidelines in the preparation, storage and clean-up of meals provided.

Education and/or Experience

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Current or ability to obtain ServSafe Food Safety Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Basic cooking skills plus experience in large-scale food preparation.
  • Knowledge of quantity food preparation, equipment and food purchasing.
  • Ability to maintain records, prepare simple written reports and use a computer.
  • Must possess the math ability to increase or decrease recipe quantities.
  • Must be able to read and follow a recipe and cycle menu.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snack for program children according to the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and/or Summer Meals Food Service (SFSP) meal patterns.
  • Plans work schedule so that food production flows smoothly.
  • Creates monthly menus in following the USDA CACFP meal patterns that are inclusive of the ethnic diversity of the program. Welcomes menu suggestions and recipes from parents in the Head Start Program.
  • Gathers information regarding children with special dietary needs including allergies. Maintains a copy of the USDA Special Meals Prescription form on file in the kitchen and ensures that special diets are adhered to.
  • Uses appropriate guidelines for estimating amounts to be prepared, utilizing leftovers for subsequent child meals wherever possible and ensuring that extra food or leftovers are distributed or disposed of properly.
  • Receives and safely stores food orders and maintains the kitchen in order to meet sanitation standards.
  • Tracks the types and amounts of food provided at meals and snacks.
  • Collects meal attendance from teachers after each meal and tallies daily and weekly meal attendance numbers and ensures information is correctly entered into the data system.
  • Performs weekly food inventory and places weekly food orders from vendors online and by phone.
  • Submits vendor receipts within three days into AVID, online invoicing system.
  • Plans and completes routine cleaning and maintenance of kitchen and equipment. Washes and sanitizes all cooking utensils, plates, cups, pots and pans. Cleans and sanitizes kitchen surfaces, floors and equipment. Ensures appropriate monitoring and maintenance of kitchen equipment including temperature charts, cleaning schedules, etc.
  • Helps integrate the kitchen into the Head Start programs by participating in nutrition education activities.
  • Eats meals with HS/EHS children in a family-style setting as time permits.
  • Continues education in the field of nutrition and food as opportunities arise by reading, attending workshops and trainings or taking courses in the related field.
  • Communicates to the Nutrition Coordinator and Health & Nutrition Manager any concerns or suggestions regarding child nutrition or food services.
  • Participates in monthly staff meetings, pre-service and all appropriate staff trainings.
  • Plans and guides parent volunteers in food service activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Employment Screening

Valid Driver's License and insured vehicle (100/300 minimum coverage) for use on the job or acceptable alternative, driving record check, criminal record check, randomized drug screening.

Head Start, Early Head Start, Childcare, and Home Visiting Programs are also subject to the following: Head Start and child care licensing requires a criminal record check and finger printing to be completed prior to employment. An initial physical examination record, including a TB screening must be obtained within 60 days of hire, updated every three years and kept on file with Human Resources. If a TB screening indicates high risk, results of a TB test must be kept on file including any treatment received. An initial driving record check will be conducted. License information will also be submitted to the agency’s automobile insurance carrier.
