Controller

Legal Advice & Referral Center

LARC is a private, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services to eligible, low-income people in New Hampshire. Our attorneys and paralegals provide legal advice mostly by telephone in the areas of family, housing, foreclosure, and public benefits law. Primarily funded by the Legal Services Corporation, LARC works collaboratively with NH's other legal services programs to provide services statewide.


Legal Advice & Referral Center seeks a Controller.  The Controller will oversee financial operations, including oversight of accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and grants administration disciplines. The Controller is responsible for the production of financial reports and statements, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets, all done in compliance with generally accepted accounting theories and principles. The Controller manages grants and monitors allocations, supervises the bookkeeper and provides advice and guidance to the Executive Director. The role oversees all banking relationships and risk management related to the company's financial and accounting activities. The Controller works closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors.

This is a part time position.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting, MBA/CPA preferred
  • Experience in non-profit financial management
  • Maturity, professionalism, and high level of discretion
  • Professional demeanor and a thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and financial management information systems. Quickbooks Software experience strongly preferred
Responsibilities:
  • Prepare all financial reports including Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, Cash Flow Statements, reports to governmental agencies.
  • Lead annual budgeting and planning process including periodic forecasting through financial modeling.
  • Review financial reports to analyze projections of budgeted revenue and expenses against actual totals.
  • Ensure appropriate application of internal controls and compliance with financial policies and procedures.
  • Clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep leadership abreast of LARC’s financial status.
  • Oversee payroll, accounts receivable and accounts payable, chart of accounts, bank reconciliations and cash flow and cash management.
  • Responsible for expenditure restrictions and accounting for restrictions related to grant or donor gifts.
  • Responsible for all financial, project/program budgets and expenditures, grants accounting and complex grant financial reporting.
  • Interface with outside audit firm, banks and lessors, casualty/liability insurance agent(s), employees and business contacts.
  • Familiarity with state and federal grants and grant reporting requirements.
  • Compliance with local, state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Prepare supporting information with regard to the annual IRS form 990 tax return.
  • Oversee employee benefits, insurance and retirement plan.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving abilities.
  • Ability to work on multiple complex projects concurrently.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Intermediate-Advanced level knowledge of MS Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Facility with QuickBooks Premier - Non-profit Edition.
