Families in Transition – New Horizons

The mission of Families in Transition – New Horizons-New Horizons is to provide hunger relief, emergency shelter, safe affordable housing, and supportive services to individuals and families who are homeless or in need, enabling them to gain self-sufficiency and respect.

Founded as a nonprofit organization in 1991, Families in Transition – New Horizons was formed as a response to the growing number of homeless individuals and families in Manchester and throughout the state of New Hampshire. Since its inception, FIT has been committed to providing only the most innovative and effective programming to help homeless individuals and families reach beyond the cycle of homelessness and lead healthy and successful lives. We believe that having a home is a basic human right and a fundamental component of becoming an engaged and contributing member of the community.

FIT’s unique combination of quality, affordable housing, and services has been recognized statewide and nationally as one of the most effective ways to end homelessness. Remaining on the forefront of research and innovation in homeless services, the Families in Transition – New Horizons model empowers homeless individuals and families to lead healthy, happy, and productive lives.

The Board of Directors of Families in Transition – New Horizons and New Horizons have voted to merge both organizations into one, effective January 1, 2018. This strength-based merger will help best serve the individuals and families in our community who are most in need.


Families in Transition–New Horizons (FIT-NH) was established in 2018 by the merger of Families in Transition and New Horizons for New Hampshire, two strong, long-standing housing and homelessness organizations in Manchester, NH.  As a combined organization, FIT-NH is one of the largest homeless services organizations in New Hampshire with locations in Manchester, Concord, Dover and Wolfeboro. FIT-NH provides innovative and effective interventions specifically designed to help individuals and families break the cycle of homelessness and lead healthy and successful lives. The organization’s belief is that having a home is a basic human right and fundamental to becoming an engaged and contributing member of the community.

FIT-NH seeks a proven, accomplished, visionary leader with a minimum of eight years’ leadership experience and a passion to eliminate hunger and homelessness in New Hampshire. This individual will bring values-based leadership characterized by unwavering integrity, an ability to garner broad community support, and the ability to lead and execute strategic plans that impact human care and public policy in a changing political environment. 

FIT-NH seeks a leader who communicates the agency's mission with depth, enthusiasm and commitment. The ability to relate to and connect with a wide variety of constituents is essential. The candidate will be able to establish strong working relationships with service providers, staff and volunteers, and program participants- people with lived experience of homelessness. Comfort with actively cultivating relationships at the top levels of political, regulatory, legislative and administrative leadership is a must. The successful candidate will be able to articulate a compelling vision and to keep people focused during challenging times.

Requirements:

Proven personal success in fundraising is a key requirement.  This could include service as a fundraising volunteer, through active solicitation of contributions from individuals, foundations or corporations, and through development of a supportive, diverse board of directors. Experience working in affordable housing or working with HUD will be extremely valuable.  Similarly, specific experience in homeless services is preferred but not required. At a minimum, an affinity for the creation and delivery of human services to individuals, families and children must be evident through previous professional or volunteer experiences. 

The successful candidate will have well-honed skills in effective business, financial management, and operations management of a similarly sized organization and will have been a catalyst in fulfilling an agency’s vision. Experience in initiating and implementing strategic plans in pursuit of broad goals is expected, as is the ability to envision and pursue system-wide connections. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a proven track record of successfully managing large, complex budgets and agreements with municipal, state, and federal agencies as well as regional financing and lending communities and private funders. 

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to build and nurture a positive culture that is grounded in a shared vision, vibrant in teamwork and supported by mutual respect and an unrelenting pursuit of quality. A proven ability to hire, coach, lead and inspire employees as an effective team is a must.  High integrity, empathy, self-awareness and sound judgment are essential to success in this role.

The successful candidate will possess the highest level of oral, written, mediation, partnership and interpersonal communication skills to effectively work with a broad range of individuals and organizations including Board members, professional colleagues, public officials and community partners, as well as the media. This candidate will build bridges of support for the organization; he/she/they will have extensive experience working in a collaborative environment with leaders across sectors to envision and implement a systemic approach to combatting poverty and homelessness. 

A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is required; a Master’s Degree in management, social services or the equivalent is strongly recommended. Diverse candidates are encouraged to apply.
