The National Alliance on Mental Illness New Hampshire (NAMI NH) is a statewide, grassroots non-profit comprised of a network of affiliate chapters and support groups, staff and volunteers that provide information, education and support to all families and communities affected by mental illness. NAMI NH’s public policy work includes advocacy for health insurance coverage and access to comprehensive, integrated health care and community-based supports without discrimination or stigma for all who are affected by mental illness.

Our Connect Program is designated as a National Best Practice Program that trains professionals and community members to prevent and respond effectively to suicide across the lifespan.   Our public health, socio-ecological model emphasizes collaboration between service providers.  Best practice protocols are provided for each service provider discipline. The training can be customized to meet the needs of a community or organization.

NAMI NH is seeking a temporary part time policy assistant position for a 16-24 hour per week position. This is an hourly, non-exempt position.

Job Summary: 
The NAMI NH Public Policy Assistant is responsible for assisting the Executive Director and Board of Directors Public Policy Committee on public policy related initiatives and projects which may include researching legislation, preparing and presenting testimony, and summarizing hearings or committee meetings in writing.   

Essential Functions:

  • Assists in monitoring legislation and policy initiatives as identified by Executive Director;
  • Attendance at and active participation in the NAMI NH Public Policy Committee;
  • Write, edit and proofread articles, fact sheets, memos, testimony, and online and social media content;
  • Work collaboratively with volunteer coordinators to recruit grassroots advocacy, identifying ways to increase member involvement in advocacy and all areas of public policy;
  • Assists with news releases, public policy alerts, research, web and social media content to NAMI NH members and stakeholders;

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding and experience with  the NH Legislative Process and other public policy
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel;
  • Five year’s relevant work experience supporting non-profit programming;
  • Ability to work evening hours as needed;
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, if necessary, at public hearings;
  • Ability to travel quickly between office and legislative buildings/hearings as necessary.
  • Above Average proficiency in the use of social media platforms including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc.  

Work Schedule:  16-24 hours per week, flexible around the schedule of the New Hampshire Legislature, when in session.
