The Upper Room, A Family Resource Center located in Derry, NH is a 501C(3) non-profit organization, committed to creating educational programs and services to strengthen individuals, families and the community.   Founded in 1986, our organization has provided support, services, education and resources to all who inquire.  Our center is a warm and welcoming place, striving to foster a sense of belonging and purpose, while providing information and guidance to strengthen children and families, and build a stronger community.

Teaching Assistant to work with students 16 - 21 in HiSET Program, assisting program in academic and post graduate support.  The HiSET Program is a high school equivalency program for high school students in the Pinkerton and region seeking an educational alternative to traditional or other high school.

  • Associate’s Degree with two years experience working with at risk/high school students or a Bachelor’s Degree. Strong math skills or ability to learn those.
  • Ability to be flexible in work flow, and classroom instruction.
  • Excellent communication skills, and abaility to relate to students needing encouragement for school success.
  • Able to work with adolescents, facilitate and teach small groups.

Work Schedule:

  • Monday-Friday   9 AM - 1 PM , school year schedule   20 hours a week Beginning August 28, 2019 - June 5, 2020  

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Assist the instructor in planning and implementing lessons, activities and tutoring for the 5 HiSET subject areas (Reading Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies)
  • Provide differentiated group instruction and individual tutoring to develop student knowledge and skills
  • Offer workshops/activities/ideas to support social emotional wellness in students.
  • Be flexible and ready to meet changing student needs   
  • Establish  good  rapport, while  maintaining appropriate boundaries, with students to encourage, engage, motivate and support them in the learning process
  • Serve as a role model for students
  • Document daily student progress and assist with required reporting, attendance and other duties as assigned.
  • Attend weekly HiSET staff meetings
  • Establish a positive, collaborative relationship with the  HiSET Teacher
  • Maintain open communication with HiSET Program  Coordinator and Teacher
  • Immediately report concerning behaviors, safety issues, etc, to Program Coordinator and/or Teacher
  • Act as representative of The Upper Room,  following expectations and guidelines
