McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is an air and space museum centrally located in Concord NH, dedicated to NH space pioneers Christa McAuliffe and Alan Shepard. Our mission is to inspire every generation to reach for the stars, through engaging, artful and entertaining activities that explore astronomy, aviation, Earth and space science.


The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center seeks part-time visitor services assistants to make a great first impression on our visitors and program participants through friendly and efficient front desk and telephone reception, accurate reservations and admission, membership, Science store and program sales. This position also serves as front line security.

Minimum requirements: High school degree or GED equivalent and six months’ experience in cashiering and accounting for daily receipts. Familiarity with computers and software systems a plus. Come join a team dedicated to creating a great science museum experience every day!

This position is part-time, and ranges from 6 – 30 hours/week. Weekday, night and weekend shifts available; more hours will be available to candidates who can work a flexible schedule that includes weekdays, weekends and nights.  Starting pay is $10/hour. 

Requirements:

Education:       Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent.

Experience:     Six months’ experience in cashiering and accounting for daily receipts. Familiarity with computers and software systems.

Responsibilities:

General Summary:

The Visitor Services Assistant is the receptionist and customer services representative at the Discovery Center Reception Desk, in the Science Store, the office, and as needed in other areas of the Discovery Center. The Visitor Services Assistant also provides support for Discovery Center programs, initiatives and financial tasks and first line security for the Center.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

  • Perform all opening procedures timely so that doors can be unlocked in time for public open hours/facility rentals/school visitors/workshops, programs or events; perform all closing procedures so that doors can be locked timely and appropriate lights turned off, at the conclusion of each of the above.
     
  • Welcome visitors as they enter the Discovery Center; provide information and assist as needed.
     
  • Serve as cashier, performing accurate cash, check and PCI-compliant credit card transactions for admissions, planetarium shows, programs, events, retail store sales, facility rentals, memberships, donations and any other needed financial transactions. Reconcile drawer at shift change or at end of day and secure receipts.
     
  • Enter data into the Discovery Center’s software system, Altru, and provide reports to management as requested.
     
  • Act as first line of security - follow Discovery Center security procedures to ensure safety of visitors and fellow staff members at all times. When working at the Front Desk, ensure that visitors pay admission and/or sign in as appropriate; when working in the Science Store, ensure that visitors pay for merchandise. Ensure that visitors behave appropriately in the Discovery Center foyer/reception area/store.  Request security assistance as needed.
     
  • Monitor reception area and reception area restrooms for clean, presentable state, spot cleans doors, windows and exhibit cases in the reception area as necessary, perform emergency cleaning when required, stock handouts and brochures in all public access areas.
     
  • Assist in marketing the Discovery Center’s membership program and other programs, through encouraging visitors to join as members and/or participate in other Discovery Center programs.
     
  • Assist with Science Store merchandise selection, entering and managing inventory, pricing and shelving items in the store.
     
  • Lead or assist in set-up, coordination and breakdown of events as needed, including set-up of tables, chairs and AV equipment for programs and facility rentals.
     
  • Provide telephone reception when working in the office, including making reservations and over-the-phone sales, providing general information, directing phone calls to appropriate staff, date stamping and distributing Discovery Center mail.
     
  • Comply with all Discovery Center policies and applicable local, state & federal rules and regulations including, but not limited to, health and safety policies and all civil rights laws.
  • Other duties as assigned.
