Family Advocate/Family Educator

Community Action Partnership of Strafford County is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization established in 1965 under the provisions of the Equal Opportunity Act of 1964. We work with community, state and federal partners to assist children, families, low-income and elderly residents with their efforts to become or remain financially and socially independent through a variety of coordinated programs. Without the services provided by our agency, many local residents would be without a means to provide for their basic needs, including food, education, child care, utilities assistance, transportation, shelter and access to other services.

This is a full-time, year-round dual-role position for a Family Advocate/Family Educator.  The person in this role is responsible for developing partnerships with families in our Head Start program and supporting families through linkages to resources that will help them attain family goals and to engage in and support their child’s school readiness.

The Family Advocate/Family Educator will oversee the coordination of all parent education opportunities for families enrolled in our Head Start, Early Head Start, Early Head Start Child-Care Partnership, Farmington Child-Care and our state-funded Home Visiting programs.

This position reports directly to the Family Services Manager.

Requirements:

• Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in social work, human services, family services, counseling or related field.
• Requires at least (2) years of related experience in service delivery to families and children.
• Requires strong knowledge of Microsoft Office required;
• Requires the ability to quickly learn new systems/databases.
• Experience organizing and/or facilitating trainings/workshops is preferred. 
• Knowledge of the use of presentation software and technology as well as event management software or applications is preferred.
• Knowledge of community resources in Strafford County is preferred.

Responsibilities:

Family Advocate
• Maintains a caseload of 1 classroom with up to 18 children/families.
• Conducts up to 5 home visits per school year with each family.
• Coordinates with program staff to ensure all required vision, hearing, health and dental screenings, physicals, and immunizations for caseload are complete in accordance  with Head Start Performance Standards and State Child Care licensing.
• Monitors, documents and follows up with families regarding child absences.
• Completes timely and accurate reporting and documentation into the designated database.
• Supports and educating families in their role as advocates for their children’s education;
• Provides resources, referrals and follow-up to families for basic social services needs and/or families in crisis.
• Recruits: All Family Advocates are responsible for recruitment of our Head Start and Early Head Start programs which includes participation in community events, coordination with local community agencies, distribution of recruitment materials, participation in application days. 
• Enrolls: responsible for completing enrollment applications for families.  This dual position will be responsible for completing applications during the summer in addition to the school-year.
• Supports parent engagement activities:  planning, coordinating, attending and initially facilitating parent committee meetings; actively supporting parent committee officers; encouraging parent involvement in the classroom; facilitating parent fundraising and other parent-selected activities. 
• Other duties as assigned.

Parent/Family Educator
• Develops, Implements and Coordinates a Parent/Family Education Program that;
o Includes parent/family education classes/workshops, activity sessions, support groups.
o Meets the needs of families in our programs;
o Fulfills the requirements of the grants that support the programs;
o Supports the mission and vision of the CAPSC agency;
o Makes offerings available to the larger Strafford County community (when/if applicable and if accommodations are available).
o Includes input and collaboration from local community organizations that serve the same populations as well as other internal CAPSC programs.
• Responsibilities for the facilitation of parent/family education offerings include;
o Development of a detailed monthly calendar of parent/family education offerings, including those provided in-house and throughout the community;
o Recruitment of speakers/facilitators;
o Managing registration of parents/families for events;
o Securing of space/facilities for events;
o Ensuring that necessary technology is available/setup;
o Ensuring that materials are prepared for each event;
o Marketing of each offering;
o Tracking attendance;
o Tracking feedback of attendees (surveys, pre/post evaluations);
o Coordinates any accommodations for food, if applicable.
• The person in this role must be comfortable facilitating some trainings/workshops/groups and is willing to receive the training/professional development necessary to administer certain trainings/workshops/groups.  
• This role requires flexibility and creativity to sometimes utilize limited resources in order bring opportunities to families; requires leveraging of resources through partnerships with the community and the larger CAPSC agency.
