Families First announces Portsmouth relocation and service expansion

Portsmouth – Families First Health and Support Center, Portsmouth’s community health center, plans to increase its capacity to offer new programs and serve more people by moving to Greenleaf Woods Drive next year.

The relocation will allow the center to expand existing services by adding more medical exam rooms and dental operatories. The new center will also include dedicated space for the Intensive Outpatient Program, which offers group treatment for people with substance use disorders.

Families First’s capacity to meet the need for substance use disorder services will be further enhanced by incorporating an SOS Recovery Community Center in the building. SOS already has recovery centers in Dover, Rochester and Hampton. The Portsmouth location will be the first located within a community health center.

Additionally, the new location will include an on-site pharmacy, open to both Families First patients and the general public.

The pharmacy and recovery center will enhance Families First’s model of integrated services, which already includes primary, prenatal and dental care; behavioral health care, including substance use disorder treatment; mobile health clinics; parent education; one-on-one family support; and social work, insurance enrollment and prescription assistance.

“This new home for Families First and, more importantly, this new medical home for our community, will be a state-of-the-art health and support center,” says Janet Laatsch, CEO of Greater Seacoast Community Health, a regional network that includes Families First, Goodwin Community Health, Lilac City Pediatrics, SOS Recovery Community Organization and the Strafford County Public Health Network. “It is situated and designed for the efficient delivery of services and will provide a welcoming space for our patients and staff.”

The larger building will improve privacy and safety for patients and staff by allowing for more distance between people. It could also allow Families First to host medical residents as part of the new Graduate Medical Education program in family medicine launched by Portsmouth Regional Hospital in partnership with Tufts Medical School in July. The program began this year with residents located at Goodwin Community Health in Somersworth, due to space constraints in Portsmouth.

The new location, just off Route 1 in Portsmouth in the former site of Seacoast Sports Club, will increase Families First’s visibility and place it near other human services organizations. While Families First serves people of all income levels, both insured and uninsured, it is particularly committed to meeting the needs of people with financial and other challenges.
