Community Caregivers of Greater Derry Celebrates 25 Years

If you have driven by the Masonic Temple on East Broadway this week, you would have noticed the new sign hanging on the wall commemorating twenty-five years of service to the Greater Derry area by the Community Caregivers of Greater Derry.

Caregivers was founded in 1988 by a group of people from the community and local churches who saw a need for volunteer services to supplement existing programs, and to provide services not available at all or not affordable to many.  Their mission was and still is to help the elderly, disabled, chronically and temporarily ill stay in their own homes and communities as long as possible.

Funded by grants, the towns they serve, the Granite United Way, private donors, civic organizations and churches, the organization has been matching volunteers with the elderly and disabled to assist with such tasks as medical transports, light chores, grocery shopping, friendly visiting, yard work and home upkeep.  In some instances, volunteers are also able to give respite to the primary caregivers so they may have some time away.

In the last year, 450 Caregivers volunteers helped 325 people.  “This service helps both participants.  It helps the individual with a task he/she now finds difficult or impossible to do, and it helps the volunteer fill that need to give back” said Executive Director Cindee Tanuma. “Many have received someone else’s generosity in the past and would like to return the favor.”

Caregivers volunteers have logged over 235,000 hours since formal time tracking began in 1992. Over the past 25 years, volunteers have helped over 1775 people.   In the past 12 months, volunteers drove just over 100,000 miles – the equivalent of 20 round trips from Derry to Los Angeles.

In addition to matching volunteers and clients for services, the staff runs a Loaner’s Closet for Durable Medical Equipment.  Over 5000 pieces of donated equipment are on loan to the general public for as long as they need it.  In the last year alone, 1300 pieces of equipment were loaned out to folks in over 90 New Hampshire and Massachusetts communities.

To celebrate, the agency will be hosting two events: a volunteer, client and supporter party at the Aviation Museum of NH on October 19th and a Gala Evening and Auction at Zorvino Vineyards on October 24th.  More information will follow soon on these great events.  If you have been inspired to give back through service to others, please call (603) 432-0877 or visit our website at for more information on volunteering.
