Bike-Walk Alliance of New Hampshire is a statewide 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to educate advocate, and agitate to improve conditions for walking and biking across New Hampshire. We want more people out walking and biking more often, which contributes to a stronger economy, healthier people, a healthier environment, and stronger communities that interact more and provide access for people who do not drive.
About the Job
Bike-Walk Alliance of New Hampshire (BWANH), the statewide bike-pedestrian non-profit organization, has launched its search for a part-time Executive Director (ED). Working in a small state where an individual can readily make connections, develop influence, and have an impact, our Executive Director will have the opportunity to use their expertise, organizational skills, and creative talents to their fullest. BWANH is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, with its programs conducted by a volunteer board with part-time support provided by an office manager, newsletter/website coordinator, and bookkeeper. Founded in 2004, BWANH is a respected resource for bike-walk safety and education programs throughout New Hampshire and seeks to enhance its effectiveness in making New Hampshire a safer place for cyclists and other vulnerable road users, while providing more opportunities for people to engage in cycling and other forms of active transportation. BWANH works with state and regional agencies and municipalities on an ongoing basis, including supporting the Safe Routes to School and Driving Towards Zero programs and serving on the NHDOT Bicycle-Pedestrian Transportation Advisory Committee. BWANH also assists bike-walk groups throughout the state from its office in Concord providing information, training, resources, funding, and advocacy for their causes. BWANH also offers League of American Bicyclists certified training in the state, including League Cycling Instructor programs. BWANH was instrumental in the passage in 2008 of NH’s “3-Foot-Plus” law, and we continue to work with the legislature on measures to establish greater opportunities and protection for active transportation participants. By hiring an executive director BWANH aspires to reach the next level in promoting safer bicycling and walking in New Hampshire. This new position also gives the Executive Director significant opportunity to grow professionally by building upon BWANH’s past successes and its existing structure.
Responsibilities:
• Work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement annual work plans to achieve strategic goals.
• Work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement a development plan to support an enhanced budget that supports the ED and other staff, as well as program expenses.
• Coordinate the development of and supervise the implementation of a communications plan in consultation with the Board of Directors.
• Work with the Board of Directors to revise BWANH’s membership model, with a view to increasing BWANH’s reach and impact.
• Supervise part-time office manager, bookkeeper, and outreach/communications coordinator.
• Oversee financial operations.
• Oversee organizational tasks such as membership/donor/supporter database, email lists, electronic and hard copy filing, invoicing, and communications with members and the public.
• Establish and maintain relationships with policymakers, the media, the public, and other organizations.
• Lead and/or participate in appropriate state-level advocacy efforts, committees, etc.
• Oversee event planning and management.
• Support the board by working with the president on agendas, ensuring materials are distributed, ensuring the secretary prepares and submits minutes.
Hours: The Executive Director position requires 20-25 hours per week on average. Depending on the skills and interests of candidates for this position, it may be combined with either or both of two other positions: Office Administrator (posted separately) and Communications Coordinator (not yet posted). Office Administrator duties require 10-12 hours per week and Communication Coordinator duties require 5-10 hours per week.
Requirements: A self-starter with:
o Strong verbal and written communication skills
o Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
o Solid computer skills
o College degree or equivalent
The ideal candidate will also have:
• Experience in public advocacy
• Experience in non-profit fundraising
• Experience in non-profit management
• Experience in public speaking and working with the media
• Experience in public forums, events, providing testimony, etc.
• Organizational skills for planning events
• Passion for bicycling and walking, and knowledge of related safety issues.
