New Hampshire Businesses for Social Responsibility, NHBSR, the premiere convener of organizations dedicated to doing well by doing good, is seeking a seasoned executive to accelerate the organization’s growth and impact.
The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership, management, and growth of NHBSR and the fulfillment of its mission to nurture and encourage socially and environmentally responsible business in our state. Reporting to the Board of Directors (BoD), this is an exciting, full-time, NH-based opportunity for a passionate, resourceful, strategic, and collaborative leader and community builder with a deep belief and joy in NHBSR’s mission.

Founded in 2000, NHBSR is a member network of nearly 250 businesses and organizations that believe that New Hampshire will thrive when we engage the power of business and our people to build sustainable and prosperous communities. As a nonprofit membership organization, NHBSR’s mission is to convene, inspire and support businesses and their community stakeholders to improve our workplaces, our communities and the environment.
Our programs bring together diverse professionals interested in corporate environmental and social responsibility, meeting them wherever they are on their corporate responsibility journey. We provide resources, foster dialogue, and help to build meaningful connections to forward our member organizations’ efforts while inspiring positive change and an engaged, inclusive workplace culture. NHBSR and our members believe business can be a force for good and that our voices are an important and powerful force to inform and influence public policy that impacts our businesses and the communities in which we operate.
With increasing interest in sustainability and CR issues in the business community and a strong reputation for influential actions and advocacy within the state, NHBSR is poised for continued growth. The NHBSR Board is looking to increase and diversify our revenue sources, grow our membership, further our expansion in Maine, increase our impact through advocacy, progress toward our diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) goals and continue to deliver excellence in our programming and value.
Position Summary
- The ED is the leader, facilitator, hands-on motivator and cornerstone of NHBSR. In this role, as the face and voice of the organization, the ED will lead the internal team, coordinate with the BoD, and educate, inspire and motivate action from NHBSR’s members and other stakeholders. The ED will create a learning organization that forwards the mission and creates a welcoming, thoughtful and rewarding environment for all stakeholders.
- Working directly with and reporting to the BoD to define our vision and drive growth, the ED will manage daily operations of the organization as well as chart our goals for the future.
- The ED will foster and manage key stakeholder relationships, partnerships and sponsorships while nurturing an organizational culture based on respect and inclusion.
Leadership, Strategy, and Organizational Management
- Collaborate with the BoD and internal team to set the strategic direction and annual objectives for NHBSR, including any new endeavors, programs and grants.
- Lead, mentor, inspire and collaborate with internal team, currently consisting of Program Manager, Communications Manager and Sustainability Intern. Size of team expected to grow based on targeted grant funding and program expansion.
- Be the thought leader, compelling communicator, storyteller and spokesperson for NHBSR both directly and through multiple forms of media outreach.
- Expand membership, revenue generation, grant writing and fundraising to support programs, education, operations and relevant opportunities.
- Ensure ongoing operational excellence in outreach, advocacy, programing, financial and operational management, fundraising, communications and systems. Monitor and evaluate processes to ensure continuous improvement.
- Represent NHBSR and our business members with intention at community activities, including State House engagements, to raise awareness and understanding of issues that impact our business community and our State.
Financial Management
- Oversee the budget and the annual budgeting process. Collaborate with the BoD to develop, manage, and track performance to budget. Ensure fiscally responsible spending and consistent adherence to bookkeeping and accounting procedures.
- Oversee NHBSR’s revenue generation including:
- Sponsorship and membership renewals and growth
- Events / Programs
- Grants / Partnerships
- Additional revenue streams through innovation and pursuit of appropriate opportunities
Operational Management & Program Planning
- Collaborate closely with team to design and refine programs to forward our mission, educate, engage and inspire members, and attract new members.
- Direct networking and collaboration efforts to create community and foster collaboration among members and non-members in New Hampshire. Explore opportunities to further expand into Maine.
- Oversee the efficient, effective and transparent day-to-day operations of NHBSR and its employees.
- Along with the BoD Executive Team, plan and execute meetings. Facilitate and organize topical committees.
Communications
- Be the chief communicator and listener. Serve as lead and spokesperson for inquiries, outreach and responses.
- With NHBSR staff, establish and execute communications and PR strategies to grow the reach and impact of our communications.
- Establish and enhance positive working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, policy makers and other organizations and stakeholders to help achieve NHBSR objectives.
People and Culture
- Maintain a welcoming, positive and safe work environment and organizational culture committed to fulfilling NHBSR’s diversity, equity and inclusion goals.
- Determine staffing requirements for NHBSR management, fundraising, advocacy and program delivery. Recruit, interview and select staff with appropriate skills and personal abilities to further NHBSR’s mission.
- Implement a performance development and management process for the staff to support their growth, monitor their performance, conduct annual performance reviews, set ongoing objectives and more.

- Abilities to prioritize, delegate, set realistic expectations, meet deadlines and build and manage a budget.
Preferred qualifications:
- Knowledge of and/or experience in corporate social and environmental responsibility
- Non-profit management experience
- Experience with fundraising and development work
- Existing connections in the NH and/or ME business communities
Total Compensation
Salary Range: $75,000 to $95,000, full time.
Benefits package includes paid time off including paid state holidays, healthcare stipend, retirement plan, flexible work schedule, remote position with routine in-state presence required.
Job Location
The ED will work from their home office and will travel throughout New Hampshire and Maine as needed, with appropriate travel expense reimbursement.
