Description

TITLE: EDUCATION ASSISTANT     

LOCATION: McLane Center - Concord, NH, Massabesic Center – Auburn, NH and various locations throughout the state  

COMPENSATION: $14-$15 an hour, commensurate with experience. This position also includes an NH Audubon Annual Membership ($60 value) and access to Pro Deals.    

HOURS: 20 hours per week, part-time, non-exempt (hourly paid) staff position. Weekend availability needed. Hours may vary according to needs.   

SCHEDULE: Schedule will vary according to needs and seasons and includes weekends and occasional evenings. Weekend hours are a focus and need for this position as NH Audubon continues to expand hours of public operation. Additional hours may be required as necessary.      

FUNCTION: This position will support the mission of New Hampshire Audubon: to protect New Hampshire’s natural environment for wildlife and for people, by implementing educational programs for school groups, preschool children, adults, teachers and families.  This position assists with care and management of captive animals including feeding, cleaning, and training. This position will lead education-based birthday parties.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:  

Assisting with the coordination and implementation of educational programs at various locations throughout the state. 

  • Assisting with the development and evaluation of programs and exhibits. 
  • Assisting with the growth and implementation of marketing efforts in support of educational programming. 
  • Maintaining program statistics database for center programs. 
  • Performing outreach to local schools and institutions to increase programming. 

Leading education-based birthday parties on the weekends. 

  • Preparing, learning and reviewing educational programs for presentation at birthday party. 
  • Performing birthday party set-up and clean-up afterwards.  
  • Providing post party feedback to supervisor. 

Assisting with care and management of captive animals. 

  • Feeding all resident animals according to the schedule and protocol 
  • Cleaning all resident animal enclosures according to the schedule and protocol 
  • Organizing and cleaning animal rooms and preparation areas. 
  • Documenting all activities on animal care on the information forms in each room. 
  • Maintaining inventory of animal food products, including frozen mice, fish, quail, fresh vegetables and fruit, and notifying the Education Coordinator about low supplies. 
  • Communicating with the Education Coordinator regarding questions or problems with the animals. 
  • Providing outreach to walk-in visitors to the Centers. 

Greeting incidental visitors and providing general information about NH Audubon and Centers. 

Performing other duties as assigned.  

LEADERSHIP: Reports to McLane’s Education Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Education: High School diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in Natural History, Environmental Education, Education or related field, or equivalent experience preferred. 

Experience: Two to three years' experience with environmental education; Curriculum development experience preferred with demonstrated ability to make independent and coordinated decisions.  Experience delivering presentations to large groups of multiple ages is preferred.  Animal care experience preferred.  Must have excellent telephone skills and experience with MS Office products. Experience with public speaking, arts and crafts or music desirable.  

Skills, Traits and Characteristics Necessary for Success: Requires exceptional interpersonal skills, attention to detail, good problem-solving skills, solid communication skills and a high degree of organization.  Creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm, with a sincere interest in the natural environment or education is necessary.  Must be able to prioritize and complete work tasks on time in a complex and dynamic workflow, have a positive attitude, excellent customer service skills, and a professional and courteous manner. Applicants must be able to pass a background check.      

Physical Demands: To perform the essential functions of the position, the following applies: requires standing, stretching, bending, walking, lifting and transporting a minimum of 50 pounds.  Must be able to climb stairs, be physically and mentally capable of performing multiple tasks under extended heavy pressure, and function in a fast-paced environment.    

Minimum age required: 18
