Physician Ruth James joins Families First

Portsmouth — Ruth James, MD, MPH, has joined Families First Health and Support Center as a full-time family physician. A graduate of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, she completed her residency at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore, where she received the 2010 Thomas Holcomb Award for excellence in pediatrics.

Dr. James is board certified in family practice and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

In addition to her medical training, Dr. James has a master's degree in public health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She served in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua and is fluent in Spanish.

Dr. James joins Medical Director Robert Slocum, DO; physician Jennifer Koop, MD; and nurse practitioners Kerry Hasselbrack, Lynne Henning, Margot Kingston, Eileen McCarthy and Virginia Smith on Families First’s clinical team. All are accepting new patients.

Families First is a community health center that provides general medical care for people of all ages and income levels, as well as dental care, prenatal care, parenting and family programs, and mobile health care for the homeless.
