It is surprising how something so obvious remains hidden until you step back and listen. At our recent Board Excellence Symposium, I listened to Susan Meier, national governance expert and was, once again, reminded of the importance of paying attention, lots of attention, to the culture nurtured in the board room. As Susan quipped, “culture will always trump everything when it comes to board effectiveness.”

The NH Center for Nonprofits, partnering with the NH Charitable Foundation, launched their High Impact Volunteer Engagement Program with ten NH nonprofits who were accepted into the year-long program after a competitive process.

The NH House recently voted 235-93 to kill SB 100, which would have eliminated the requirement for an employer to provide employees with the option to receive payment via a live check. Instead of mandating that all employers offer a live check option, SB 100 would have permitted an employer to pay wages with a pay card, if an employee chooses not to participate in direct deposit. This radio series demonstrates the positive impacts of New Hampshire nonprofit organizations, and how our quality of life is nourished and enhanced by the nonprofit sector and those who support it with their time, treasure and talent. We have featured over 230 nonprofits to date - telling powerful stories of the work that charitable groups do to strengthen communities and enrich lives. Mount Washington - A brand new, interactive winter experience will soon greet summer visitors to Mount Washington, as Mount Washington Observatory prepares to perform a complete redesign and renovation of its museum at the summit. Plans for the museum, entitled “Extreme Mount Washington,” were unveiled to members of the media at a special reception this morning in North Conway.

The whirlwind of controversy surrounding the disclosure that the Internal Revenue Service had singled out applications from conservative advocacy groups seeking tax-exempt status for extra scrutiny could damage the agency’s ability to regulate charities, hinder needed efforts to update IRS rules, and deter nonprofits from expanding their advocacy efforts, say nonprofit experts.

ProPublica, an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest, has announced the launch of Nonprofit Explorer. This online tool for researching tax-exempt organizations includes nonprofit tax return data released by the IRS in April 2013 for tax returns processed by the IRS during 2012. This generally consists of filings for the 2011 fiscal year, but may include older records.
