About the Organization

Manchester Community Music School serves over 1,500 individuals each year through a wide range of high quality music programs including early childhood classes, private lessons, chamber groups, the largest youth ensemble program north of Boston, summer community band, summer camps, the most comprehensive Suzuki program in the state, an extensive outreach program, and a high quality, well-established music therapy program. Our students and clients range in age from 6 months old to 80+ years young and attend the school from 60 New Hampshire communities. MCMS serves the wider Manchester area through our extensive outreach programming, working to keep music at the center for New Hampshire's education and enrichment programs for every child, youth and adult. Community partnerships are an important part of Music School programming as they enable us to bring music education opportunities and music therapy services directly to those who can benefit most, but who otherwise might not have access. Core to our mission, the Music School is committed to ensuring that anyone wishing to study music or benefit from music therapy services can regardless of their financial situation. As such, MCMS awards more than $100,000 in financial assistance each year.

Executive Director

The Music School is searching for a dynamic leader who can continue to bring strategic vision and growth to the organization.

The ideal candidate will understand and value the ways that music impacts our lives. They will bring a passionate commitment to the mission of the school and the communities we serve and will be able to clearly articulate a vision for continued growth of the Music School. This position reports to the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Leading the schools mission to "change lives through the power of learning, sharing and making music"
  2. Working with the Board of Directors to set long-term strategic goals and annual operational goals
  3. Board and committee representation
  4. Managing a highly qualified leadership team including: Director of Music Therapy, Outsourced Accounting Staff, Senior Director, Director of Education, Office Manager, Registrar, Performance Leadership Director, and Program Coordinator
  5. Develop and implement fundraising strategies to support the school's ongoing operations and capital needs
  6. Working with Outsourced Accounting Staff to ensure successful financial management of current operating budget
  7. Identify and cultivate relationships with potential donors, sponsors, stakeholders and partners in the community
  8. Representing the school and acting as a spokes-person to the community, donors, and sponsors
  9. Ensure that the school's programs are aligned with its mission and are of high quality
  10. Oversee the school's facilities and ensure that they are maintained in good condition
  11. Ensure that the school complies with all legal and regulatory requirements, including tax filings, licenses, and permits

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in business, music or related field; advanced degree preferred
  2. At least five years of experience in a leadership role in a not-for-profit organization, preferably in the arts or education sector
  3. Successful team leadership skills
  4. Creative and innovative problem-solving skills
  5. Strong strategic planning and donor development skills
  6. Passion for music education and a deep commitment to the school's mission
  7. Strong financial management skills, including experience with budgeting and financial reporting
  8. Proven success in fundraising and development

The Executive Director will be expected to work full-time, including some evenings and weekends. the compensation package will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
