MAPS Counseling Services

Founded in 1973, Maps is a non-profit organization, committed to providing effective and affordable psychotherapy and substance use counseling to the people of the Monadnock Region. With a staff of 16 licensed psychotherapists and three doctoral students, Maps is the largest private provider of outpatient psychotherapy in the Monadnock Region. This year we will serve over 1000 individuals of all ages, including nearly 100 clients who do not have insurance and need support. Our child and adolescent team works with children who have been abused, children on the spectrum and children displaying emotional or behavioral problems. Our adult team specializes in treating trauma, depression, anxiety and marital problems. We also have specialists in substance use problems and recovery. Supported by the Hope and Healing Fund, Maps makes it possible for uninsured and underinsured individuals and families to find the help they need at a reasonable cost. Maps is also proud to partner with Cheshire Medical Center to provide a free weekly support group for people with cancer or recovering from cancer.

Maps also accepts most major health insurance plans, as well as Medicaid and Medicare. Maps is somewhat unique among mental health agencies in our attention to spirituality. Maps is not a religious or pastoral agency, but we have traditionally built strong ties to our spiritual and faith communities, and we actively work with each client's unique spiritual heritage to help them find the resurces to navigate life's challenges.

Maps Counseling Services has two offices; one in Keene and another in Peterborough. Both offices are handicap accessible and may be contacted at 355-2244, ext. 8104.

Maps is open and providing services during the current pandemic. All of our therapists are meeting with clients via teletherapy; connecting through their computer or cell phone. During this difficult time when all of us are isolated and anxious, Maps therapists are there to provide comfort and guidance.

Please visit our website at for a full history of Maps and a description of our staff. Our website also has photographs and bios of each of our clinicians and students, along with descriptions of their areas of specialization. You may also call our Executive Director, Dr. Gary Barnes, who will be glad to tell you about Maps. Be sure to give him a lot of time as he has a lot to say!
