NH Legal Assistance

Founded in 1971, New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) is a statewide legal aid organization with four decades of experience in providing low-income and elderly clients with access to justice.  NHLA’s mission is to fulfill America’s promise of equal justice through civil legal services, including education and empowerment, advice, representation, and advocacy for systemic change.

With five offices located throughout the state, (Berlin, Claremont, Concord, Manchester and Portsmouth), NHLA is able to serve New Hampshire’s most vulnerable citizens with high-quality civil legal services focusing on basic human needs: preserving people’s housing, protecting their subsistence income, obtaining access to health care, and maintaining their safety, independence and dignity. In 2015, 19 attorneys and paralegals and 10 support and administration staff at NHLA served over 6,500 New Hampshire residents.

NHLA provides a range of legal services, including simple information and referrals, detailed and specific advice so our clients may represent themselves, and full legal representation at agency hearings or in court. Our legal advocacy results in many clients receiving or maintaining the long-term housing, income benefits, and health care to which they are entitled and which make it possible for them to become self-sufficient.

We address systemic issues through advocacy in the courts, the Legislature, and other policy-making forums. We seek to improve local and state policies on housing, benefits, health care, public utilities, domestic violence, and other issues of concern to our clients. This advocacy not only benefits our individual clients but directly impacts tens of thousands of New Hampshire's most vulnerable residents.

We enhance our clients' independence and control over their lives by giving them the information they need to help them solve and prevent legal problems. This is accomplished through outreach efforts that include pamphlets, speaking engagements, and presentations for client groups, social service agency staff, private attorneys and other advocates.

NHLA is highly regarded in the legal community, the judiciary, and among social service agencies across New Hampshire and has a long-established reputation for excellent fiscal management and program oversight.  In 2008, NHLA received the New Hampshire Corporate Fund’s prestigious Dunfey Award for excellence in nonprofit management.  NHLA is also the recipient of two unsolicited multi-year operating grants from the Endowment for Health in recognition of our role as one of the “key” New Hampshire advocacy organizations in New Hampshire.
