Friends of the Concord - Lake Sunapee Rail Trail

Our mission is to create and maintain a 34 mile multiuse trail from Horseshoe Pond in Concord through Contoocook, Warner, Sutton, Bradford and Newbury to Newbury Harbor on Lake Sunapee. This route substantially follows the former route of the Concord & Claremont Railroad.  Our Tagline is, "Ice cream every 45 minutes!"  Its our way of saying a family riding bicycles on the trail would encounter another town center every 45 minutes.  We will achieve our mission by building trail segments of independent utility in each town and then adding additional trail segments until the entire trail is built.  Its a big challenge as much of the land comprising the former railroad is privately owned.  But you and your neighbors are remarkable and landowners are providing easements, towns are granting us permission, and progress you can walk on is happening.

Friends of the Concord-Lake Sunapee started as a program of the Bike-Walk Alliance of NH.  In 2017 we became our own 501c3.  Our board members live in Concord, Hopkinton, Warner, Sutton and Newbury.

2019 saw us complete initial projects in Bradford and Hopkinton.  These compliment two completed projects in Warner.  We are currently working on a 2.5 mile project in Concord. Lots of details and links to video on our website,

2019 also saw us purchase and install a number of Dero Bicycle Fixit Stations along the rail trail.  These permanent outdoor stations let people make basic repairs and adjustments to bicycles.  They include a pump and all the tools like allen wrenches, pedal wrench, screwdrivers, etc that can save the day when you are out on the trail.

We are also currently working with the National Park Service Rivers and Trails Conservation Program. They are providing us with technical assistance in the design of several particularly challenging sections of trail.

Friends of the Concord-Lake Sunapee Rail Trail was named as a Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists in early 2020.  We are one of 1366 businesses across the country to have earned this designation.
