Patriot Resilient Leader Institute

The Patriot Resilient Leader Institute (PRLI) is a group of Lakes Region veterans and concerned citizens who came together in late 2013/early 2014 committed to combining the talents of area professionals and the scenic beauty of the Lakes Region area into programs that would assist disabled veterans throughout New England to (in the words of our Mission Statement) “recover their physical, mental and emotional well-being."

To achieve our goal of helping veterans recover their physical, mental and emotional well-being, we run 3-to-4-day Camp Resilience retreats which provide life skills training in the morning and team-building/adventure activities in the afternoon. Pre-screened participating veterans are housed and fed at the Gunstock Inn in Gilford, NH and attend free of charge. (We require a $75 registration fee which is refunded upon program completion.) The program is targeted towards veterans with serious disabilities to include limb amputation, traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress.

Some sessions are general in nature, while others focus on a specialized topic or population such as women-only, Military Sexual Trauma, PTSD and Moral Injury, couples, and spouses and caregivers. Life skills workshops can include topics such as resiliency, anger management, mindfulness, sleep issues, wellness, exercise, mindful eating, financial management, and more. The sports/team-building activities which vary with the season include hiking, kayaking, sailing, the Aerial Treetops Adventure ropes course at Gunstock, snow-shoeing, downhill skiing and x-country skiing. Typically, two of retreats per year are equine retreats run by a member of our Board of Directors who is a former Navy SEAL, a PhD candidate at Plymouth State University and who has many years of experience running similar programs at the Ironstone Farm in Andover, MA.

We work closely with the VA Medical Centers, VA Vet Centers and other Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) throughout New England to source and pre-qualify our attendees as well as to advise us on appropriate life skill programs. We have run 28 retreats since 2014 (two in 2014, six in 2015, nine in 2016, and eleven in 2017), with the majority having counselors from the VA or NH Army National Guard participating as facilitators.  We have a particularly close relationship with the Worcester, MA Vet Center; which has sent many of its counselors and veterans to participate in our retreats. They refer veterans to us, provide help in screening the veterans and provide facilitators to help run our programs.

Since being founded in 2014, we have run 28 Camp Resilience retreats (two in 2014, six in 2015, nine in 2016, and eleven in 2017). In 2017, we were able to develop three new, specialized retreats for couples, spouses and caregivers, and PTSD and Moral Injury by suggestion of VA counselors.

In 2017, we were also able to have an AmeriCorps VISTA member begin service as a full-time member of our team. Since she began, she has been able to help recruit and manage volunteers, write grants, and develop a business plan so that we can begin to move towards running 40 sessions per year by 2022.
